Show Page Two FRIDAY, National High Blood Pressure Organization Closer To Reality Controlling high blood pressure, the silent killer which afflicts more than .23 million Americans, is the ultimate goal of ag roup of health professionals who have taken the first steps towards forming a national organization to combat the disease which is the leading risk factor in stroke, heart attack and kidney diseases. The action is an outgrowth of the First National Conference on High Blood Pressure Control held last March at Milwaukee, Wis., in which more than 300 Physicians and other health professionals from 38 states participated. A planning committee was named at the conference to explore the forming of a national organization to coordinate and assist high blood pressure detection and treatment programs. Meting in Milwaukee on May 21, the planning committee laid the groundwork for an organization to be called the National Conference for High Blood Pressure Control, which will be a loose confederation of groups represented at the March conference and other interested parties, according to Constantine Panagis, M.D., Milwaukee health commissioner who was named chairman pro tern of the planning committee. Dr. Panagis said the new organization will help in the development of community high blood pressure control programs as well as act as a mechanism for exchanging data and technical information. Our main concern is reducing the prevalence of high blood pressure" said Dr. Panagis. "there is no one organization currently capable of doing that alone. We hope to involve all those who can provide important services, right down to the local level, he added. The committee also made plans for a second conference of health profesionals to be held in March of 1976. The next meeting of the planning committee was set for July 29 at Milwaukee. If they are large and deep or involve the eye, the tongue or mouth, hands or feet, they do not itch. Hives can also be accompanied by difficulty in breathing or swallowing, stomach disturbances, fever, and in certain cases kidney changes. To understand what hives can do, it is necessary to understand that hives are swellings due to escape of fluid from the blood. If the swellings are dose to the nerve endings of the skin, itching can result. If the swelling is in the stomach, pain, nausea and vomiting may occur. If the swelling is in the brain tissue, headache and other symptoms may result. Hives may come and go, may last a few hours to a few days, or may be chronic and last for months or years. If you have acute hives it is likely that you are allergic to food or drugs. The most common drug likely to pro ate. duce an allergic reaction is aspirin. These reactions may range from hives or a runny nose to relatively serious respiratory difficulties such as asthma. People who are sensitive to aspirin can And an effective substitute in TYlnolan algesic products: Available in either tablet or liquid form, Tylenol products are usually well tolerated by those sensitive to aspirin, and they act safely and quickly to provide temporary relief from simple headache and discomfort of a fever when taken as directed. Foods which are most likely to produce an allergic reaction are strawberries, peaches, can- taloupe, fish, shellfish and nuts. Also, if you are allergic to a particular food you may not be able to eat a related food. For example, if you have hives from peaches you may not be able to tolerate apricots or nectarines. A search for, and removal of, the allergy-producin- g foods and drugs is of the greatest importance. This means a meticulous inquiry on the part of the doctor and good detective work on your part. You neednt be a Sherlock Holmes, but some intelligent cooperation with your doctor, such as keeping diaries of your food and drug intake are important ways to find the hidden causes of your allergy and eliminating them. NUTRITION A LA CARTE Salads can make a wonderful at 350 degrees for lunch, especially for business men and women who have to return to a desk for an afternoons work. Most restaurant menus now offer salads that are almost complete meals. Have one with milk to drink and youll avoid that sleepy afternoon feeling that a heavier meal can create. During pregnancy the food needs of the mother and baby are inseparable. Without enough nourishment, the mothers health may be undermined by depletion of her body stores of nutrients. Your doctor will tell you whats best for you, but weight gain should be regular throughout pregnancy and should total 22 to 26 pounds for most women. Milk should be included in g diets. I advise this because milk is an outstanding source of excellent protein, also calcium, riboflavin, and other important nutrients. Its difficult, in fact, to plan an adequate diet without milk. Whole or skim milk should be included in all diets, reducing or not. Want to add a delicious touch to your barbecued hamburger or cheeseburger? A fourth meal daily is becoming part of meal planning. Children often dont get enough calories from three meals. Nutritious snacks are the answer. An excellent snack that helps meet a youngsters need for calcium, protein, and vitamin A is a milk shake. One cup of milk, a fourth cup ice cream, and flavoring is the basic recipe. Salt tablets wont really help the athlete when he sweats. Hes already lost a lot of body water. To dissolve the salt tablet in his body it takes more water from his blood. And before the water can get back into his bloodstream hes lost still more water perspiring. So its a useless procedure. Just have him drink a lot of water instead.
