Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES IIIMINCra REPOST on June 15, 1967 and the higher shoreline on Jan. 4, 1896, when Utah became a state belongs to the United States. The Supreme Court however, said the United States has no claim to that land and awarded title of it to Utah. Its always been clear to me that Ultah owned that land, Rep. Howe said. After all, it was covered by the lake at the time of statehood. Rep. Howe also noted that the Supreme Court left open the question of whether or not Utah has claim to land between the shoreline of the Great Salt Lake on Jan. 4, 1896 and the lakes meander line before statehood. There is more land that was covered by the lake before statehood, Rep. Howe said, and whether or not Utah has claim to it is a much more complicated legal question than ownership of the land covered by the lake at statehood. But I am happy to see that the Supreme Court was careful to leave that question open, and Im hopeful that future court action will award title to some or all of that land to Utah. Survey Reveals Religious Beliefs of Prison Inmates majority of Utah State Prisparticipating in a confidential survey of their religious backgrounds and beliefs feel that repentance is necessary A on inmates to absolve sin. The study was conducted by University of Utah graduate student Jerry Jolley. His findings were outlined Thursday at a meeting in Provo, Utah of the newly-forme- d Utah Sociological Society. Mr. Jolley said 80 per cent of the convicts expressed a belief in God; 62 per cent think the Devil exists; 53 per cent stated that miracles really happen and 48 per cent are confident there is life after death. Sevently-on- e per cent said a is good way to comprayer municate with God and 68 per cent described religious faith as important, according to the U. survey. The sample consisted of 105 minimum and medium security male inmates who were given a religious background and opinion questionnaire. According to Mr. Jolley the data show a surprisingly high rate of church attendance by convicts during the first 14 years of their lives. He said about two-thirof the inmates reported they attended church once a week or more during that period. However, the percentage dropped dramatically to 25 per cent during the 15 to 19 age period and to less than 10 per cent in the year prior to an inmates conviction. The survey showed that 86 per cent of the inmates felt that God had at least some influence in the daily lives of people. Forty-three per cent indicated thoy had been close to God or a Divine source at some time during their life. Mr. Jolley said the form or make-u- p of God was a puzzle to many inmates. He said about 30 per cent did not know the of the Diety. form or make-u- p to be distant for God appeared many of the prisoners. ds Page Five Hearing Conservation Brochure Available 'Biogenic Amine Metabolism' Cause of MBD Researcher Claims Without Cost Reaction to Great Salt Lake Decision Applauded by Howe .Congressman Allan T. Howe expressed delight with the United States Supreme Court decision giving title to Utah to all the land covered by the Great Salt Lake at the time Utah became a state. Ive followed this case for the almost 10 years it has taken to reach a conclusion, and Im delighted that it has finally been decided in Utahs favor, Rep. Howe stated. Pointing oht that hearing impairments strike people of all ages and all walks of ife, Posen said that while hearing loss is most common among persons 65 years of age and older, there are crrently an estimated 800,-00- 0 individuals under age 17 who are hearing loss victims. Hearing loss obviously is a universal problem. That is why we believe this brochure can be valuable for everyone, Posen added. The condition is characterized by behavioral abnormalities certainly throughout the early life of the individual, and they may well persist into the 30s and 40s. Paul Wender, MD, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Utah College of Medicine, gave the background and overview' of the problems of MBD as he spoke to physicians attending a Symposium on Minimal Brain Dysfunction. Dr. Wenders thesis asserts that a persons disorder in biogenic amine metabolism is the primary cause of MBD. He recalled an observation made after World War I, when a massive worldwide epidemic of influenza occurred. The disease affected the brain and, after recovery, many adults displayed symptoms of Parkinsons Disease, a neurological disorder. Children recovering from the epidemic often displayed continuing behavioral problems that, if one reads their description, from were indistinguishable children with MBD today, he stated. We know that Parkinsons Disease is caused by viruses attacking a portion of the brain that uses the amine depa-min- e as a transmitter cally transmitted. The word hyperactivity gs is sometimes used as a catch-al- l term for children who suffer Alfund-raisivarious MBD symptoms. though hyperactivity is one of the symptoms, it should not be lsed interchangeably with miniDr. mal brain dysfunction, fund-raiseWender stated. Children who have abnormal metabolism of the biogenic amines of the brain (such as dopamine) have been shown to be less susceptible to positive and negative reinforcement, he said. Reinstating these amines, through various drug regimen, produces increased condition-abilit- y. sub- stance, he said. By implicaevidence tion, circumstantial would suggest that when similar neurones were attacked in children, the behavioral difficulty was produced. In later years the disorder was thought to be seen in children who had suffered head injuries, lead poisoning, and diseases such as whooping cough, which can damage the brain. Genetic studies have shown increased psychopathology principally sociopathy, alcoholism and hysteria among parents of MBD children. The fact that MBD appears in family clusters could mean that it is either a genetically or psychologically transmitted disorder, Dr. Wender said. However, recent studies of MBD children who have been adopted or placed in foster homes show that the adoptive parents were no more disturbed than were the parents of normal children. Moreover, the natural parents of showed more MBD children hysteria, sociopathy, and alcoholism than did parents of normal children. These and other studies of the occurrence of MBD in siblings and placed in foster homes led Dr. Wender to conclude that it is likely the disorder is genetihalf-siblin- turbances; as toddlers, they are into everything at home; as school-ag- e children, they have learning difficulties, whicn may be due to inattcntivcnes9 and a lack of and also difficulty adjusting beliav-iorallto the classroom setting. There are reasons to believe that these kids run a greater risk of becoming juvenile delintheir quents in adolescence impulsivity and lack if control, their school failure stemming from their learning difficulties, often make them outcasts, he commented. A number of reports indicate that MBD may occur in as much as five to 10 per cent of American school-ag- e children, he said. In the past, its been assumed that the disorder was outgrown at puberty and was merely a stage in development that one had to put up with, he stated. A number of follow-u-p studies now indicate that a large percentage of these children, perhave haps as many as one-hal- f, adointo that problems persist lescence and possibly into adult- Hansen Planetarium To Begin Run of The Loneliness Factor The new star program at the Hansen Planetarium is The Loneliness Factor, an inquiry into the possibility that we are not alone in the universe. This summer NASA will launch two Viking unmanned spaceprobes which will land on Mars during the Bicentennial celebration in 1976. The Viking landers are designed to search for life on Mars. If it is found that another planet in our solar system possesses life, no matter how rudimentary, it will be a strong indication that life, and even intelligent life, is abundant among the trillions of stars in the universe. In search of life on other worlds The Loneliness Factor explores several of the most fascinating questions about the universe: How did the universe begin? Does the composition of the universe suggest that there is life on other plants? If intelligent life exists elsewhere, what will it look like? Can we travel to the stars? Can we communicate with beings on other worlds? The Hansen Planetariums new star show The Loneliness Factor is a delightful and challenging excursion into the frontiers of science. The Loneliness Factor will continue through June 1, with performances Monday through Saturday at 10:30 a.m., 2:00, 4:00, and 8:00 p.m. and performances on Sunday at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. I am told so many ill things of a man, and I see so few in him, that I begin to sucpect he has a real but troublesome merit, as being likely to eclipse that of others.
