In October of 1970 Utah's Governor, Calvin Hampton, instructed his Department of Development Services to actively pursue possibilities of attracting the movie industry to Utah. Since that time, movies, television series and commercials filmed wholly or partially in Utah have accounted for direct expenditures of nearly five million dollars into local economies throughout the state. Those five million dollars in direct expenditures by the movie companies equate out to nearly fifteen million dollars in buying power for Utahns. Ilal Schlueter, Movie Coordinator for the State of Utah, say, One major reason for Utahs growing success in attracting new film producers is, simply, word of mouth from satisfied production companies that have already worked here. Often times Utah is chosen as a site location over other states because of the overall cooperation movie makers receive from citizens and governmental agencies in Utah. The future continues to look bright for film making in Utah. According to Schlueter, inquiries from production companies are coming in at an ever increasing rate. There has been a steady growth pattern during each of the last four years with 1974 showing a sharp increase of project completions over 1973. From early indications it appears that 1975 will outdistance any previous year both in dollar volume and production scheduling. To make certain that Utah is well represented in the market, at least once a year a delegation of Utah officials invade Hollywood led by Schlueter and Governor Hampton himself, 'fagged Hamptons Haiders, this group meets with high powered representatives of major movie and television production companies to enroll a well dusted red carpet that stretches clear back to Utah. This red carpet approach by Hampton and his Haiders appears to be paying off in long green as more and more of filmdoms best use Utahs scenery to set their scenes. The Sun Shines Bright In 1909. a display of the aurora borealis was seen at the equator. Astonished residents of Jakarta and Singapore gazed into the sky at gleaming ribbons of light, fearing according to individual disposition. Neither the citizenry nor much of science knew that magnetic eruptions on the surface of the sun caused the phenomenon. Since that time, science has acknowledged that the sun affects the small planet Earth in unsuspected ways. Eugene Parker, professor of astronomy and astrophysics at The University of Chicago, best known for his the stream of charged identification of the solar wind particles pouring out of the sun, studies the suns magnetic fields, which are responsible for the pyrotechnical diplav known as the Northern Lights. its erupThe sun is sometimes extremely active tions are magnetic, not volcanic. The aurorae are caused by these eruptions, and it takes about two days for the blast wave to get here. These magnetic eruptions also generate the magnetic storms that affect communications. as An electric current carries a magnetic field does any chunk of iron. All astrophysieal bodies have magnetic fields, and magnetic fields do strange things. People used to think, Parker says, that the entire surface of the sun had a magnetic field of one or two thats two or three times the magnetic field of gauss the surface of the earth. It turns out thats not correct. Acually, the sun is covered with isolated tubes of magnetic fields: theres a small area with a field measuring 2,000 gauss. In the past, some of the suns peculiar activities have been duly recorded, particularly ourora because they are s, spectacular. They usually occur only at very higli because that is where the blast from the sun pen- Republican Salt Lake County Commissioner William Dunn would like to head a major department in the county. But the other two commissioners are keeping the major chores lor themselves. Mr. Dunn complained about this situation last week and the two other commissioners responded this wreek by awarding him two more department personnel and library. But they also took awray one of his minor assignments the agricultural inspection and placed it under the control of Commissioner Kutulas. The minority commissioner never has received a major department in the history of the county. The Salt Lake County Com- mission voted to reduce the dog b cense fee to $10 from the previous $15. Commissioner Dunn and Kutulas voted to reduce the fee. Mr. Kutulas explained that he and Commissioner Dunn agreed the commission made a mistake when it voted last December to raise the license fee from $5 to $15. They instructed he county auditor to refund $5 to the purchaser of each dog license since the higher fee went into effect. Salt Lake County Clerk W.
