Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1974 Pag Utah Division American Cancer Society Reaches 1974 Goal The Utah Division has reached its Crusade goal for 1974, establishing a new record for contributions, according to Fred A. Schwendiman, Provo, Chairman of the Board of Directors. Through the efforts of State Crusade Chairman, Ellis R. Ivory, and aoproximatelv 18.000 volunteers, over $340,000 has been raised from thousands who gave generously to support the battle against cancer. This is oarticularly commendable in a year when the economy has been uncertain. Anyone who follows news knows that the economic arrows have generally pointed down. Not so with the Utah Division, whose aims and achievements have been steadily unward. This years collections represent a $25,000 increase over last year, but nerhaos more significantly. they represent an increase of $150 000 over a seven-yea- r period. Almost half of the total amount, raised this year came from the Salt Lake County Crusade headed by Robert. Oarff The residential campaign, under the direction of Irene Bentley and Marg Christiansn. was particularly ffective and brought in over $68.000 a new record. Next to Salt. Lake County. Weber County had the highest total income, being in excess of $40 000. Davis Sounty County Unit had the largest increase in the state exceeding last years income by 147 percent! Seventeen County Units met or exceeded their goals. When it comes to Cancer Crusade dollars. Utah enloys a sizeable return on its investment. In fact, at the present time the American Cancer Society research grants now in effect at various hospitals and universi-intie- s in the state total more in dollar amount than was collected in this years record-breakin- g Crusade. With increased funds will come increased activity in the field of cancer control. Projects in Utah which now cover a wide snectrum will be expanded. These include public and professional education programs, public information activity and service to cancer patients. The Virginia Whitney Cancer De tection Clinics are a good example of cancer funds at work. In the past five years, 11,467 women have been examined in 44 separate clinics for breast and uterine cancer and given a Pap smear test. These nationally recognized clinics will be conducted in increased numbers during the coming year using funds raised in June by the Virginia Whitney Golf Tournaments under the leadership of Mrs. Barbara Prince. BOB JONES University GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA EMM Many people are unable to differentiate between revival and evangelism. Evangelism is the going out to preach the Gospel; revival is something God sends by the Holy Spirit when He moves in power in answer to prayer. True revival, of course, is always accompanied by great preaching. One reason there is so little evidence of genuine revival today is that there is such a dearth of great preaching. For the most part, our preaching is shallow and superficial. It may include Gosnot does but it Sel preaching, the strong doctrines of the Word. On the other hand, there is a dead, doctrinal sort of preaching in which the preachers overemphasize doctrine at the expense of passion for souls. Great preaching which has been characteristic of all great revivals has combined heart preaching and doctrinal emphasis in line with dictation. Again, daytime and MACHINE CALCULATIONS.. .A course in Basic Business Machines. SSOOK BOB JONES & i the Word of God. Revival preaching is Scriptural preaching, but Scriptural preaching includes more than the mere proclamation of the Gospel. Scriptural preaching includes warnings of Hell and judgment and wrath to come; it rightly divides the Word of Truth (II Timothy 2:15); and it sounds forth the whole coun- sel of God (Acts 20:27), which includes reproof, rebuke, and exhortation (II Timothy 3:16). The majority of our evangelists are superficial in their approach. They do not discuss prophecy or raise strong voices with regard to the issues of the day. Although we still have many voices that are sounding the trumpet, there is need for even more preachers and for greater preaching in order that the people of God might be throughly furnished unto all good works.
