That suggestion comes from Darcie H. White, President, Utah Safety Council who added that safe trailering begins with a properly equipped trailer. White Proper equipment, means said, hydraulic or electric trailer brakes if the trailers loaded weight is over 3,000 pounds. Most automobile brakes, he explained, are not sufficiently powerful to ensure safe stopping when the car is pulling a heavy trailer. The total outside width of the trailer and its load, White continued, should not be more than eight feet; and in addition to the lighting required by the state vehicle code, the trailer should be rigged with four reflectors & two on the rear and one on each side. Choosing the right hitch for the weight of the trailer being pulled is also an important safety consideration, according to White. Its a good idea to consult a service station or auto parts store for advice on the best kind of trailer hitch for the type of he said. load being pulled, Generally, the safest hitch is one that bolts directly to the cars frame. Bumper hitches, "White said, may be adequate for some rigs, but they should never be used to pull a trailer with a loaded weight over 2,000 pounds. A hitch safety chain, he added; is required by law in most states but even where its use is not mandatory, a safety chain connecting the trailer tongue and the hitch is a valuable safety feature. Experienced White said, trailer haulers, check the tightness of their trailer hitch and safety chain every time they stop for gasoline. One facet of trailering safety that is commonly overlooked, according to White, is the condition of the tires on the trailer rig. Trailer tires are usually smaller than automobile tires, White said, so for each revolution of the automobile tire, the trailer tire may make or two revolutions. As a result, the trailer tire wears faster than the automobile tire. Trailer tires that show less than 232 inch tread depth, White said, should be replaced. White also said trailer tires one-and-one-h- alf All Youth Horse Show To Be Held July 17-1- 8 The Salt Lake County Recreation and Parks Department, ALL YOUTH HORSE SHOW will be held July For several years now the Recreation Department has sponsored this event which gives dozens of young horse-ridin- g enthusiasts a chance to show their stuff. Department should be kept inflated to recommended and pressures added that underinflation could result in trailer sway, fishtailing and loss of control. Good trailer handling, according to White means good balance of the load being carried. But a good load balance on a trailer is really an imbalance. In loading a trailer, more weight should be placed forward of the trailers centerline than behind it, White said. The rig should be front-heavwith about ten percent of the weight resting on the hitch. A stern-heav- y rig, he will tend to fishtail added, when being pulled at highway speeds. Good handling, White said, also means knowing how to compensate for an extra 20 feet of vehicle beyond the cars rear bumper. For example, White explained that trailer rigs tend to track farther to the inside of a curve than the automobile pulling the rig. In order to keep the trailer from crossing lane markers or bumping over curbs, the driver must steer his automobile Left to right: Richard E.
