Show THE SALT LAKE TIME1 FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1974 State Board of Education Calls For Daylight Savings Repeal Pilot Study Conducted by Society On Hill Air Force Base Smokers With daylight savings time enacted into federal law, the safety and well being of all young children ate placed in greater jeopardy, It would be well for the school officials to take concerted action to protect the young and to prevent injury to them in any way possible. While safety programs are always in order the circumstances in which school officials find themselves under daylight savings time call for particular action at once. Incidents of children being injured by cars and molested under cover or darkness have been reported. The State Board of Education has adopted a resolution calling upon Congres to repeal the Act during the months which require children to go to school in the hours. In addition, each superintendent is urged to be particularly safety conscious during the winter months when children attend schools in the darkness. Programs in the schools on safety and involvement of the public in such programs are matters of great urgency which should become a significant part of the curriculum of schools. The State Board of Education has called upon all law enforcement agencies to double their efforts to enforce traffic and the others laws where safety of the young is in question. Similar action by local boards of education would seem appropriate. Parents dread sending children off to school in the dark. Early morning drivers are also frightened when a pedestrian in dark clothes suddenly looms in front of the car. They are usually walking in the road because the sidewalks have not been shoveled. There is a civil ordinance in Salt Lake City and County requiring that walks be shovelled, but it is not enforced. To save lives, prevent accidents, worry and misery: 1. Everyone should shovel his sidewalk. Then all pedestrians could walk safely to school or About 600 chronic smokers at Hill Air Force Base will be used in a pilot study to detect abnormalities in their lungs hopefully before any of them develop lung non-daylig- ht work. 2. Pedestrians, especially the school children walking in the dark or waiting for a bus, should wear white ponchos or belted vests made of white oil cloth. It is waterproof, inexpensive, durable, easy to keep clean and can easily be seen in the dark and fog. Students could make these garments at school and for identification they could print on them their names, address, and phone numbers. This would be a worthwhile project for PTAs, church groups or civic clubs. 3. Have police officers speak on traffic safety at all schools to children and parents. Its great that crossing guards for Salt Lake Citys schools will have fluorescent vest and gloves flash along with special two-wa- y so can see them. motorists lights These worthy gentlemen deserve every consideration. Any program to protect the children must be statewide. Supt. Walter Talbot of the State Board of Education is now sending letters to all district superintendents, according to Mrs. A. Stark of the Salt Lake Safety Council. cancer. Once lung cancer develops and can be detected by x ray, it is usually too late to do much with it. Such screening offers the major hope to poin-poismokers who have moved into a critical danger one, but who do not yet have malignancy. The study will be carried out by Dr. Cyril Fullmer, a pathologist and technicians and facilities at Holy Cross Hospital, with the help of a $12,930 grant from the Utah Division, American Cancer Society. pre-canc- er nt Dr. Wesley R. Mote of the U. S. Air Force Hospital at Hill AFB, is associate clinical director for the project and is helping to line up volunteers for the screening. Medical authorities have said that some kind of a screening program to detect lung problems before they turn to cancer is one of the major medical needs in the nation. Those with cell abnormalities will be followed with further screening at periodic intervals and the net results will be sent to their private physicians. In addition, the smokers with these abnormalities will be given help from the Cancer Societys withdrawal clinics in giving up the cigarette habit. Dr. Fullmer said abnormalities in the sputum may be indication that lung cancer is lurking in the wings, but has not yet started the invasion which shows up much later as a spot in the lungs in an Once that point is reached, the odds become very slim indeed for the victim, Dr. Fullmer noted. In Utah the average length of survival for people who have been diagnosed as having lung cancer is five monthh and nine out of 10 expire within a year, he said. Changes in the structure and color of the abnormal bronchial cell nuclei can be distinguished from cancer, then he empha-siebut abnormalities are evidence that a problem might be in the making. Knowledge about just what happens to cells which turn into cancer is still limited and is the object of major research being carried out all over the world. Dr. Lindsay R. Curtis, Ogden, an official of the Cancer Society, said that the results of the pilot study will be closely watched by medical experts throughout Hie nation. x-ra- The 1974 edition of Tax Guide for Small Business is now available at Internal Revenue Service offices in Utah. One thing that worries true men of God is Americas increased concern about our image abroad. It is that Christians important n resent the right image for the T.ord Jesus Christ: but without the right kind of foundation, the Lord Jesus Christ as the center of everything, the right kind of image is impossible. Christians need to remember that the most mportant thing of all is a right attitude of heart If the heart, the center, is right, evervthing on the circumference will be right. Did you ever hear a record that had a hole bored about a quarter of an inch off center? The sound is worse than rock anJ roll, as bad as that is. How would you like to ride down the street in a car whose wheels were off center? Yet many lives are attached to a drive wheel that is near the circumference of the circle instead of being dead center upon the place that the axle turns. This leaves everything out of things first Today, most people build balance. Life must be properly the outside first. They are balanced, and to do this, there more interested in the appear- must be unity in Christ. ance than in the actual fact Released by Gospel Fellowship Association ' Union Hosts rs. Holman, president of Utah Idaho Farmers Union, on Feb. 18, Utah and South Idaho Farmers Union members will have the pleasure of hosting Farmers Union members from the states of North and South Dakota and Nebraska, and will arrive on the Farmers Union jet. They will arrive in Salt Lake City at 3 p.m., at which time nearly 24 farmers will and the balance of 24 will continue on to Twin Falls, Idaho, where they are expected to arrive at 4:45 p.m. Following the arrival of the Farmers from the midFly-I- n west there will be a dinner at the Airport Holiday Inn in Salt Lake City and Ponderosa Inn in Burley, Idaho for the purpose of getting acquainted. Thereafter each farmer and his host will depart for their home areas. For two days they will be visiting farmers and ranches and exchanging views as related to agriculture and seeking answers to questions and solutions to many problems facing the American de-pla- ne farmers. In conclusion, Mr. Holman stated that this was the most ideal way to exchange ideas and views concerning the farmers problems, in that they can, in a united way, seek legislation that would be in the best interests of all farmers in the nation.
