Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY. JANUARY 11, 1974 Rabbit Numbers Decrease in State Research on Student Feelings Completed After Project Utah rabbit hunters will be hard put to find their quarry this 3-Y- year. Division of Wildlife Resources biologists from the states five regionals all report rabbit numbers are very low. Biologists have found that rabbit populations of cyclic, and that populations fluctuate on about a ten year basis. Utahs rabbits are apparently in their low population level of that cycle. Jack rabbit hunters can find some success near Bonanza off Highway 40 near Vernal. Cotton tails in northeastern Utah are few and far between. Southern Utah reports jack rabbits are fund in isolated pockets west of Richfield and Cedar City. Numbers have dropped down from last year. Cottontails are found in some groups, but few and far between and only those familiar with locations of the cottontails should make the trip. Northern Utah biologists report jack rabbit numbers are as low as last year and possibly lower. That regions only significant hunting is in western Box Elder County. White tailed jack rabbits can be found at higher elevations in upper Cache and Rich counties. Central Utah reports rabbits can be found in Cedar Valley and Rush Valley in as goodly numbers as anywhere in the state, but that they are still lower than last year. West desert populations are reportedly way down. Cottontail hunters are reminded they need a small game license, while no license is required to hunt jack rabbits. This Cookie Hides Discomfort TAKE sr SPECIFICALLY FORMULATED FOR SINUS HEADACHE ear A three year project to develop ways of measuring how students feel about themselves and their education has been completed. Eight Rocky Mountain States were involved in the research, which was directed by the Interstate Educational Resource Center, located with the State Board of Education. The new research, says the project director Dr. Kent Worthington, will help us measure such things as a students self esteem, attitude towards teachers and school, and personal motivation. Being able to measure progress in the affective (feeling) area will open up a whole new field cf education. In the past, 90 per cent of our efforts have been directed at student progress in the academic or knowledge area. Because we havent been able to measure how a student felt about things, we have neglected instructional activity in this important area. Using the new methods of measurement, Page Eleven educators may now assess a student's feelings and perceptions and work from there to improve them. The research to develop measurement instruments includes input from about 6000 students, who represented all social, economic, ethnic and geographic conditions found in the mountain states. Eight separate categories for measurement were developed: self esteem, self confidence, independence, responsibility, respect for others, social relations, motivation and school attitudes. The project is part of a state Board of Education goal to make Utahs educational system more responsive to the individual need and desire of the students. Sani-FIus- h out germs. Sani-FIus- h Hardware Ranch Sleighs Running Elk have returned to the feeding grounds at Hardware Ranch and there is at last enough snow on the ground for horse drawn sleighs to take sightseers on a tour among the herd, according to Ivan Turnbow, ranch superintendent. Turnbow reports nearly one foot of snow is found on the site where elk are supplementally fed each winter, which is enough to prevent sleigh runners from damaging the meadow. Supplemental feeding of the elk herd began later than usual because mild weather made it unnecessary for elk to visit the ranch until recently. Storms of lost week, however, brought the herd down and between 250 and 400 elk are being fed daily. Sleigh riding hours are from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Guests of the ranch can tour the new Visitors Center while waiting for their ride. There is no fee. Hardware Ranch is found 17 miles east of Hyrum at the head of Blacksmiths Fork Canyon. wipes Toilet Bowl Cleaner wipes out common household germs in 15 seconds.
