Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, Currant Creek Dam Approval Speeds Central Utah Project The word from Senator Wallace F. Bennett that Secretary of Inetrior Rogers C. B. Morton has approved the Currant Creek Dam and the Vat Tunnel is one giant stride forward for the Central Utah Project and the future of Utah," Lynn Ludlow, general manager of the Central Utah Water Conservancy District, has said. Senator Bennett said that the Secretary informed him of his on decision to give the the Current Creek Dam and the Vat Tunnel in a meeting last week. go-ahe- ad It is my understanding that bids will be asked for immediately on the $14 million dam and construction should start next spring. The people of Utah are really going to be pleased with the recreational facilities that will be created as a result of this new dam in addition to its important function as a regulating reservoir with minimum drawdown. Currant Creek Reservoir will have nearly 290 surface acres, and its location near the high Uintahs should make it a prime site for trout fishing and other recreational uses," he said. The appropriate federal agencies already have tentative plans for the recreational development of the area including a number of campgrounds, boat ramps and other facilities." The new reservoir will be located about half way between Heber City and the Strawberry River, northeast of the present Strawberry Reservoir. Construction of the Vat Tunnel which will transport water from the West Fork of the Duchesne River to the new Currant Creek Dam Will be deferred for about a year, to insure that there are sufficient funds available and to allow additional time for further Violations Cost Californians $2,000 Division of Wildlife Resources law enforcement authorities had been notified that a camp of non resident deer hunters had been engaged in illegal activities in San Juan county. Investigation of the mattter this ye&r bore out the accusations, indicating that the group of hunters were involved in numerous violations, said Law Enforcement Chief John Nagel. Nagel said the investigation spanned most of the deer season. Once illegal activities could be proven, Division wildlife officers filed complaints against five California hunters and the camp operator with San Juan County attorney. The officers then took these hunters to the magistrate, who assessed bonds totaling $2,000 on 13 charges. Several of these men could not post bond so were jailed until bond could be arranged. Charges included killing more than one big game animal, unlawful use and transfer of another persons hunting license, wasting of wildlife and tagging violations. Nagel pointed out that these violations committed by the six men are the type that hurt the honest hunter most and have a damaging effect on the resource. They are exactly the type of violations that the Division wants to curtail. Only a greyhound can run down a jack rabbit in a fair chase. Coyotes and foxes must resort to their wits to catch it. NOVEMBER 16, 1973 Utah Symphony Plays U.S. Savings The Utah Symphony under the baton of Maurice Abravanel will play its next subscription concert Saturday, November 17, in the Salt Lake Taberancle. Maestro Abravanel selected the work as an appropriate piece to play at the memorial concert for President John F. Kenedy. Also speaking at the convention was Thomas R. Bomar, the chairman of the Federal Home Loan Land Board, who remarked that it should be observed, on the positive side that in the last month, there has been a decline in mortgage interest rates. He noted that Once you get the machine shut down, it takes time to get it back in gear again. Bomars comments reflected the attitudes of the. majority of the Utah Savings and Loan leaders interviewed at the convention. Most expect interest rates on mortgage loans in Utah to decline slightly in 1974, yet few hold out any hope of an increase in housing starts over 1973. Said Del Stoker of State Savings, I dont think there is any question about the decline in housing starts next year. Even when more funds do become available there is a certain lead time that is necessary for builders to formulate plans for construction, he said. priorities. Speaking to nearly 7,000 delegates attending the national convention in Dallas, Gilbert went on to say that savings associations should be given powers allowing them, among other things to make unsecured loans to the builders, finance builders inventories, own a mortgage banking firm, manage real estate and to group together to finance new towns. Gilbert termed 1973 a year in which the savings and loan business came under attack on a number of fronts, including the changing interest rate patterns, diminishing housing shortages, proposals to change the nations financial structure and the threat of changed taxation. In my judgment the greatest single threat to the efficient functioning of free financial institutions in the U.S. is inflation. Better answers to the problems of inflation must be found than to periodically curtail the money supply, forcing interest rates to levels which knock the home buying public out of the market, he said.
