Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES Corrosion of Galvanized Pipe Can Put Cadmium in Water Hard waters may have helped for years to prevent the introduction of cadmium into drinking water. The entry of this toxic metal into water supplies via corrosion of widely used galvanized pipe was discussed at a recent meeting of the American Chemical Society. Reported to accumulate in the body where its presence is abnormal cadmium can replace the zinc that is normally found in some proteins. A contaminant in galvanized pipe (iron pipe coveted with a, protectice layer of zinc), cadmium can enter water supplies as the protective zinc corrodes away, said the University of Michigan College of Engineering. This process is accelerated if a new copper pipe is attached directly to an old galvanized pipe. Corrosion of galvanized pipe and the entry of cadmium into drinking "water can be reduced by coating the inside of the offending pipes, it is said. Hard watet that contains considerable calcium carbonate (or dissolved limestone) can coat the pipe with a layer of solid carbonates. Many of our older homes and municipal water distribution systems use galvanized pipe. Since galvanized pipe is slowly being replaced by copper or plastic pipe the corrosion of galvanized pipe is expected to be a problem of limited duration. . In contrast to its relatively more abundant ssiter element zinc, cadmium is a trace element, to man, which is and its presence in human tissue is regarded as abnormal. Relatively little is known regarding regarding the chemical and psychological behavior of cadmium chain. in the soil plant-animThere is sufficient evidence in the literature to conclude that cadmium tends to accumulate in biological tissues. Moreover, the cadmium appears to displace and compete with the essential non-essenti- al al Auto Daredevils Slated at Davis Stadium June 24-2-5 A 14 man troop of stunt drivers The King Kovaz Auto Daredevils will present the nearly two hour show of close calls and comedy at the Davis Stadium Sunday and Monday, June The show blends a variety of skills from the machine gun delivery of the announcer to the steel nerves of a clown who lets fast moving cars come within inches of running him down. In addition to his baggy pants and unpredictable actions, the clown is one of Hollywoods top stunt drivers. Trick driver Billy Little is a veteran of 20 years in the thrill business. He can hold a car on two wheels at top speeds for the length of a grandstand. At the Lagoon show he will use a pick up truck to deap from ramp to ramp, 70 feet through space. Veteran stunt man King Kovas has worked 26 years as daredevil and clown. He coordinates the exhibition and keeps the pace of the show tight despite complicated preparation needed to have 28 individual maneuvers. While one act is performing another prepares to go on as still a third crew gets more equipment ready. Other daredevils include one dive bomber expert, a human battering ram, and a car rollover expert who performs a dangerous slide for life through a pool of flaming gasoline. 24-2- 5. Rampton element zinc for binding sites within certain protein complex. "Inadequate information regarding the role and chemical behavior of toxic trace metals such as cadmium in the aqueous environmen may have consequences of unforeseen magnitudes, as has been experienced in the case of mercury. "The uncontrolled presence of cadmium in the aquatic environment constitutes a potential health hazard, particularly in view of the fact that its fate and behavior with Irespect to the soil plant animal chain is not well understood. Any arbitrary dispersal of cadmium into the environment must therefore be viewed as undesirable. "Cadmium may enter drinking waters by corrosion of galvanize pipes. This is presumably a temporary problem in view of the present trend toward use of copper and plastic plumbing material. From the standpointof the high toxic potential of cadmium to man, a study of the corrosion behavior of the metal in representative water systems was felt of immediate importance to establish criteria for preventative measures. Utah Techs new main campus Technology Building now has an official new name. Its the Calvin L. Rampton Technology Building. Approved by the College governing board, the designation was announced at the Colleges spring quarter graduation program. Gov. Rampton delivered the commencement address. College Press. Jay L. Nelson says the building was named for Gov. Rampton because he was instrumental in obtaining funds for the building. In 1969, his suggestion was adopted to use $4 million of the total $7 million allocated for state building funds for that year to construct the facility. Gov. Rampton also broke ground for the building in February, 1971. In use since last September, the building was At a press conference held at the Salt Lake Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau, executives of the Bureau unveiled the Salt Lake Valley new V.I.P. Guest Coach. The custom design Dodge Maxi Sports Wagon was bought by the Bureau to assist in showing visiting dignitaries and the V.I.P.s the value of the Salt Lake Valley as a convention site. The van will also be used to chauffeur travel agents, visiting journalists, travel writers, and other people who are instrumental in promoting Salt Lake to tourists. Lamar Williams, convention manager for the Bureau, said that inspection teams from large associations were arriving at a frequency of almost once a week. Some of the inspection teams number more than eight people. The distinctive blue and white van is rebuilt to carry 12 people in comfort on their tours of the Valley and its facilities. The exterior is painted to display the distinctive seagull and mountain signature and the name of the Visitors Bureau. dedicated this past December. In accepting the honor, Gov. Rampton said, "I would not be nearly so pleased if the designation were of any other building on any campus of this state. It is the first building to be named after the governor, according to Mike Miller, his press secretary. It also is the only building at the college to be named after an individual. I Federal Government Bidding Procedures To Be Discussed Businessmen in Salt Lake City and the surrounding area who are interested in selling products or services to the federal government will have an opportunity to learn the procedures on June 27. John E. Holden, Regional Director of Business Affairs of the General Services Adminis-trtio- n regional office in Denver, Colo., will be available for personalised conferences from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the State Briefing Center, Walker Bank Bldg. Arthur F. Sampson, head of GSA, the multi million dollar business arm of the government, believes that more businessmen need to be informed on how to do business with Uncle Sam, and the program of systemized services to suppliers has been expanded accordingly. The information concerns: government business opportunities; how to get on bidders mailing lisst; locations of contracting offices; how and where to obtain government standards and specifications and how to keep informed of current bidding op- portunities. . He points out that the federal spending for goods and services now totals about $100 billion annually. He says GSA buys and 0 stores and distributes some to common use items federal from office ranging agencies motor and to vehicles supplies and snake bite kits. toothpaste 49,-00- FREEZONE IS FOR CORNS THAT HURT But they dont.
