Large families have been particularly battered about by these alarmists. Large families are beginning to fight back. it Our association is a association providing economic benefits to 170,000 families with three or more children. Eventually, we fully expected to reach th 14 million large families of Ameriac. Its a startling fact that 23 percent of the American families raise over 65 percent of our children. The population explosion myth must be shattered. It is thriving on fear and leads innocent people to emotional and dangerous actions. It leads to a Nazi type mentality which starts out with slaughtering unborn children and winds up in killing off old people and other undesirables in our society. We can regain a reverence for all life in our country and emphasize the infinite value of a child as long as we dont permit the fearmon gers to frighten us by overworking our emotions. The alarmists cry that we are running out of resources but cant name a resource that we are running out of. The cry about running out of food but know very little about the world food supply and what they do know is obsolete. Every unbiased, reputable source indicates without exception that the trend in foot production for a generation has been more food per person in spite of population increases, They cry about pollution, ye can name no pollution which can cannot be cured in spite of the growth in population. They cry about lack of space, yet don even know how much space there is. Actually, its amazing non-prof- guments of the alarmists we find hey have nothing but fantasies md high powered rhetoric. Coin Clark, the worlds most renowned demographer, emphatic-ll- y agrees with our position. The alarmists are really copj nuts since it is easier to cry about populations than solve the problems that need solving. They gnore the still unlimited opportunities in the world and the known cures for many of our problems. Professors James H. S. Bossard and Eleanor S. Boll of the University of Pennsylvania have given a ringing endorsement of the large family in their book, Large Family System, University of Pennsylvania Press. They point out that large family living makes for an early acceptance of the realities of life, that teamwork is encouraged and develops naturally, that good ganization and leadership devel-p- p in such a sysetm, that discipline is stressed, that large families tend to develop close bonds and that large families make for a certain balance in sanity in child rearing. Sir James Spence, the first time professor of child health in Great Britain says, A family at its best would have in it five or more children without wide gaps in age between them. The parents at their best would come from similar families, but prefereably not the firstborn nor the lastbom of these families. This variety gives the necessary range of characters. There are no star players on this stage, for all are equal stars. They play their parts and live their lives in a constant interchanging of re Cull down the lationships scale of the ages, and they do this within indefinable lines of conduct automatically accepted up and as their code. Johnson said the executive committee and staff of the American National Cattlemens Association had been meeting to review the situation and to think of additional ways to meet con sumer demands for beef. The Utah cattle industry spokesman pointed out that more Americans are employed today than ever before, and that week workers ly earnings of non-farten since dollars have increased the beginning of Phase II of the Presidents economic stabilization program. When people improve their standard of living, they want more meat on the table, John son said. He pledged that Americas 200,000 cattlemen will continue to make every effort to meet consumer demands, as long as they can expect a reasonable return for their efforts. However, we can only increase the beef supply at natures rate, the Utah cattle producer said. Thus, the record amount of beef available today is there because five years ago the American cattleman decided to increase their herds. He said there are 14 percent more cattle on feed in 1973 than just two years ago. Johnson pledged that beef pro duction would continue to increase. However, he cautioned Unwise restrictions can serious ly effect the cattlemens willingness to increase his investments and thus have a direct impact on the amount of beef available to the consumer. Accumulative effects of the efforts I have described should soon show up in the retail market, Johnson concluded. m 12:12-19- ).
