Another ad offers to provide confused executives with just the right counsel and advice for them to make career changes that will result in fulfillment, happiness and a major salary increase. A third ad promisse to construct a resume that will sell the applicant into just about any job he or she desires, with .the implication that the manner in which' the resume is. written is more important than the applicants qualifications. These are just a sampling of the "too good to be true offers that bewilder and confuse job seekers in todays complex employment market. The tragedy arises when the consumers pay hundreds of dollars for services that cannot help them find good jobs, or when they are duped into 'trusting fraudulent ' operators who offer no real service and prey bn people desperate for work. If consumers clearly understood the types of personnel services available to them, many cases of misunderstanding or fraud or deception would be eliminated. This knowledge will also assist job seekers in selecting the right type of personnel service organization to turn to when looking for a job. The National Employment Association of Washington, D.C., a major consumer advocate in the field of employment and manpower, distributes free a brief summary of analysis of personnel service organizations entitled Who Does What in Personnel? This pamphlet out-liethe kind of service consumers may expect to receive from private employment agencies, executive search firms, professional recruiting or firms, temporary help services, resume writing service, letter writing operations, association or society clearing houses and executive counseling firms. Also included is information on fee arrangements for each kind of service, although specific fees are not quoted due to the dirverse charges that exist in . i (Continued from Page 1) who answered the questionnaires ranged from 18 to 30 years of age. In the 0 group, 69.0 percent of the men and 57.8 per cent of the women had experienced intercourse, while in the 21-3- 0 group, 75.5 percent of the men 18-2- and 84 percent of the women were experienced. The researchers found that American men starting intercourse at 15 or younger usually .met their partners in their neighborhood. All other American groups were most likely to have met their partners at work or school. Swedish men ,on the other mmd,1 differed, in that older starters more likely met partners at dances or parties, and younger starters met partners in their neighborhoods or school or work. Very few men iii either country had initial experiences with prostitutes. In both countries women were less likely to report only one experience with first partners. The majority of both Swedish and American men reported that their first partners had previous experience. Seventy four percent of the Swedish men and 62.6 per cent of the American women reported partners with ..... . experience. In all groups, late starters reported more positive experiences, more satisfaction, and less remorse.' In both countries men reported more positive events, more satisfaction, and less remorse than women. Americans report- ed more positive first experiences, more satisfaction and less remorse than the Swedish. In both countries, men were more likely to want in- tercourse for themselves than women were. The earlier women started, the less likely they were to want it for themselves. Curiosity was a more important motive for initial experience for Americans than for the Swedish. Electric Shocks Can Detect Underground Pollution Underground water that has been polluted by acid mine drainage can now be detected from the surface by electrical methods. Borrowing a technique long used to identify underground ore bodies, geophysists have used a form of electric shock to identify and map polluted ground water channels. The technique coul lead to surer location of drainage sources and to one the spot monitoring of the effectiveness of abatement measures. Hundreds of abandoned mines some closed for half a century pour acid water into streams via a maze of natural underground conduits called aquifers, but the pollution source for any given stream must be precisely identified before effective abatement measures can be started. The new electrical method promises to provide an inexpensive and portable means of running down such sources from the surface. Field experiments by Penn State scientists literally shocked the earth. Using a 1200 volt source they sent a current into the ground from electrodes inserted only two feet deep. The effect of the current flow was measured, and using various interpretive procedures, the scientists were able to identify polluted aquifiers by their relatively high conductivity. I olluted water, particularly acid mine drainage, conduct current well because it is rich in chemicals that are a of the mining operation. It may be ten to a hundred times more conductive than normal ground water. Thus an electrical of the region enabled survey the scientists to trace the contamination to its source in a specific pile of mine tailings. by-prod- THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1972 uct . . ; ns semi-re-sear- The method ch each geographical region of the country. It is less important how much one overeats than what types of foods' are consumed to excess, he said. People who are fat as the result of overeating animal fats are more likey to develop coronary artery disease than the peope whose obesity is caused by an over indulgence in foods that do' not elevate levels of blood cholesterol. Dr. Barnard also notes that the overweight people tend to receive less effective treatment from their physicians than do people within the normal weight boundaries because they are more difficult to diagnose and to treat. Just the simple act of listening to the heart with a stethoscope is more difficut in the fat individual, he said. To minimize the likelihood of developing higfh levels of chole- sterol, he recommends that the mothers bring up their children to avoid diets high in animal fat and to concentrate more on food containing vegetable fats. If the good eating habits are instilled in childhood, the individual is more likely to eat the proper foods when he grows up, he said. I believe very strongly in organizations such as the Weight Watchers. I feel that people who help overweight people reduce render just as great a service to humanity as do surgeons who repair damaged hearts, said Dr. The Utah State Commission was schooling branch office managers from the commissions 20 offices throughout the state of Utah in the preparation for the issuance next January of an all-tihigh of one million new license plates. Every Utah vehicle will get a new set of plates, being black figures on a white background, beginning Jan. 2. me . Salt Lake County Commis- sioners have assigned Traffic Engineer Don Spencer' to start on the street sign changes so the names match the numbers. The Commissioners were told by the State Highway Department surveyors and planners thta the job is a much needed one. Salt Lake City has already painted out names where they conflict with numerical designation.. . According to the final financial report submitted by the governor candidates show they collected more in campaign contributions than the $105,253 they were permitted to spend. Democratic Governor Calvin L. Ramp-to- n received a total of $113,141 and spent $89,643 and Republican candidate Nicholas Strike received some $105,688 and he spent $102,980. - tk Salt Lake City has received $51.10 as full payment for dam- age to city owned property in a hit and run accident, but the drivers identity remains a mystery. The payment was turned over to the city by the clients attorney, but the attorney refused to identify the driver. The police have been looking for the person since last month so the prosecution could be initiated. Glen Canyon recreational area has become the premiere attracBarnard. His strong personal interest in tion and figures have indicated is true. Carlton Johnweight control stems from his 21 that this year old daughter, who has a son, area supervisor, said that weight problem and belongs to 907,412 persons have visited the various areas of Glen Canyon so , to Weight Watchers in far this year, up 38 percent over South Africa. 1971. There were 66,533 persons visiting the area during the of October this year, up is so sensitive that it can detect change month 91 percent over the same month Cape-Town- in the level of contamination over a period of time. Thus it might be used to monitor abatement measures and determine their effectiveness. If the water as actually being neutralized by the application of lime, the electrica soundings would reveal that fact. The electrical method can also help locate fresh water beneath th eground; il too responds distinctively to electrical current. dial 860 Where thousands of listeners enjoy concert music and news every day! a year ago.
