Show FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1972 Page Twelve Federal Court Rules in Favor of Hopi Tribe in Arizona Suit The Navajo Tribe has denied the right of the Hopi Tribe to use or possess any of the surface of the Joint Use Area, and has damaged and misused the 1.8 million acres in northeast Arizona, according to a ruling issued by the U.S. Federal Court in Tucson this week. The Findings of Fact and Conclusions of Law signed by United States District Judge J. A. Walsh stated that the United States Government through the Department of the Interior and the Bureau of Indian Affaris has since 1962, vacillated, equivocated, delayed and denied the Hopi Tribe any substantial possession or use of the Joint Use Area of the Hopi Reservation. The U. S. Government still continues to procrastinate, vacillate and refuse to deliver to the Hopi Indians their one half undivided interest in the surface of the Joint Use Area, the court the judgment of the Court and that the Court should make the Fawns Belong THE SALT LAKE TIMES - Economic Stabilization In the Wild People who take home abandoned fawns would be most helpful to the animals and themselves if they left the fawn in the wild. Young wildlife are seldom abandoned, even though it may so appear. Mothers are usually near by and return as soon as intruders have gone. Persons who take fawn deer home soon find the animal can become a great problem, even though it was once so cute and lovable. Young bucks during the rut season become unpredictable and have been known to injure humans. Additionally, deer have feeding habits which become hard to appease. When deer owners learn this, they often call Wildlife Resources officers to pick up the animals. Deer released from captivity have become semidomesticated and are easy victims to predation, illega kills and highway mishaps; they also find it hard to live in the wilds to which they are not accustomed. It is against the law to remove a deer from the wild or to have a deer in capitivity contrary to the Wildlife Resources Code. other orders as may be necessary to insure the use of the Hopi lands by the Hopi Tribe. Judge Walsh set a hearing for Sept. 30 to determine exactly what form the court orders will take. The Court ruling specifically made no findings as to restitution due the Hopis for having been denied their property for so long or as long as the liability of the United States in this matter as the trustee of Hopi lands but expressly reserved such matters for later consideration. Federal Court has affirmed what we Hopis have been saying for years, that the Navajos, with the complacent acceptance of the BIA bureaucracy, have taken our lands from us and prevented us by simple force of numbers from the rightful use of what is ours, Clarence Hamilton, Hopi Tribal chairman said. said.
