Show r,.. THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, JUNE 23, 1972 our - Salt Lake's Salt Palace to Undergo Renovation Program The Salt Palace in Salt Lake City is scheduled to undergo a renovation program with projected expense of $250,000. The program calls for canopies over many walk ways and fixing the leaks which have developed in the roof of the structure. McGowan Hunt, board chairman and a civil engineer, said that it would cost more to repair and maintain the walks than it would to build the canopies. The canopies will be constructfrom (Continued page one) ed on the north side and along can exist without creating certain social influences and, the northeast section extending to the sidewalk. thereby, acquiring responsibilities beyond those of a At the regular meeting of the purely business nature. Among these responsibilities, I board of directors of the Salt believe, is trying to help to maintain an economy in which Palace, Fred Haun of the Salt Big, Varied and Flexible small and medium size business organizations can play their important roles. Large businesses are sometimes thought to favor practices wliich are unfair to small business. Nothing could be further from the truth. We are as anxious to see elficient small business Arms succeed as are any of the champions of small business and we believe we are somewhat more practical in our approach at times. There are areas of work and extremely important areas where the small business can do the job best, just as there are other areas where the large business, with vast human and financial resources, is needed. An often overlooked fact is that the big business is frequently a major customer of the small business, through and in other ways. Great numbers of small busiso-call- ed sub-con-tra- cts nesses could not exist if it were not for the large businesses. For instance, that segment of the oil industry with which most people have their personal contact is the service station and the majority of service stations are independent small business operations. The American economy is big enough and varied enough to require the services of efficient businesses of every size ana kind. Commerce Better Than Aid When we think of American contributions to the betterment of the other nations of the free world, we often think exclusively of what the government has done. That is one result of the much publicized huge foreign era. aid programs of the past-wBut many an American industry is making in the normal course of business very important contributions in this field. Coal is such an example. Last year Americas coal exports were the largest in history. They are running at very high levels this year and that is expected to continue. The reason, one official remarked, is that Europes economy is continuing its post war growth and the coal industry of England and the continent simply cannot provide the coal required. Without American coal, many basic European industries would be in dire straights. That includes the metallurgical industries, on which a nations economic welfare and military security both so largely depend. ar The Word Is 'Convenience' The price of food is in for much discussion. So is what is known as the spread, the difference between what the farmer receives for food products and what the consumer pays in a store. The man reason for todays spread can be expressed in one word: Convenience. One authority says, The fact is that the housewife today demands something more of her grocer than she did a few years back. The modern lwmeinaker wants tomatoes from Texas when they arent available from nearby truck gardens. Instead of buying a 25 pound bag, she buys it in 1 or 2 pound boxes that fit neatly on the cupboard shelf. A frozen beef pie that she can pop in the oven for a hurry-u- p meal is a time saver for which she is willing to pay. pre-cook- ed the Lake Promotion and Development Board said his department is helping to move to the county computer program which will help in the case of scheduling conventions. Mr. Haun also said that his department has on file a list of almsot 16,000 conventions throughout the world which are potential conventions for the Salt Palace. The financial standing of the Salt Palace to this point is up almost 9.4 per cent ahead of last year at this same time. The income for the month of May is approximately $78,000, bringing the years income of the facility to around $458,889 for 1972. LEASED GRAPEVINE Salt Lake County Commissioners have approved $475 tuition to send 11 persons to the University of Utah School on Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies. Kenneh Odell and his 9 member alcohol probation department staff and Fred Harden, a mental health specialist for the mental health unit, were selected. Governor Rich F. Kniep of South Dakota notified Governor Calvin L. Rampton that temporary needs of 5,000 persons who lost their homes in the recent flooding are being met. A relief fund has been set up to aid the met to be the within many persons still in need. Salt Lake County and Kennecott Join in Issuing Pollution Bonds Salt Lake County and Kennecott Copper Corp. agreed to issue industrial bonds to finance $35 bonds. The million Commission approved a County of memorandum agreement with the firm. The action will be followed by a friendly suit by Salt Lake County Attorney Carl to seek a declaratory judgment on Utahs industrial bonding act. Mr. Nemelka informed the commissioners that the bonding law is ambiguous in covering the financing because such work is not necessarily industrial promotion as required by the law. County and Kennecott officials will continue to prepare for the bond issue while the case is in court. Kennecott Copper Corp. has been the target of much protest in the field of pollution. Kennecott officials have agreed that they have been doing much in the area of the pollution factors to help eliminate the trouble.
