Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1971 Study Indicates Many Childhood Accidents Need Not Happen Studies being conducted at the Human Factors Laboratory of the University of South Dakota, the only laboratory of its kind in the nation, have revealed serious inadequacies in our accident prevention programs for children Kedbook magazine reports. While accidents cause more injuries and fatalities than the leading six childhood diseases combined, many programs and instructions designed for childrens safety are either misdirected and insufficient, the magazine said. The most frequent mistake wr make as adults is to assume that a child has a miniature version of our reasoning power, and that he will therefore be able to interpret dangerous situations by using common sense. The truth is that concepts we attribute to common sense are usually based on systematically learned information and withoul that learning a childs common sense may produce completely unexpected conclusions. For example, many children run out against red lights because the red, green and yellow symbols have not been explained properly. Most children know they should look at the lights but may not be sure what to look for. A study conducted in England concerning a traditional safety jingle which was simple, easy tc memorized, seemed reasonably clear. But when the children were tested, it was discovered that many of them age five freight thought the poem had the quality of magic. They assumed that just by reciting it at the curb they were doing their part in protecting themselves for crossing . Economic Stabilization Rent Regulations These researchers have also learned that boys should be given different safety instructions from girls in some cases and especially !n traffic safety. Boys have more 'treet crossing accidents than the girls, and the Laboratory discovered it is because of behavior Interpretations on rent regulations were the most frequently asked questions at IRS Information Centers during the first week of the current economic control period, according to Roland V. Wise, district director of the Utah Internal Revenue Service. The director said that basically the rent guidelines had not changed since the initial 90 day freeze period. Rents are generally frozen. However, several exemptions from the rent freeze have been granted by the Price differences. Girls tend to leave school in groups and chat with one another on the way home.
