Science coordinator Haven Bergeson says interdisciplinary courses and unstructured classrooms recognized by most faculty members as optimum teaching techniques of the future are already being implemented in the U Honors program. This year Dr. Bergeson plans to establish interdisciplinary classes with team teachers to examine serious multi-facete- d problems which no single person is qualified to teach. Take the subject of arms limitation, he said. Since its a political, economical and engineering question, it should be taught by specialists from all three areas. He is also stressing the need for Honors science students to take more philosophy and social science classes. We can no longer tolerate narrowness. The civil engineer should be concerned with the beauty of the countryside, not just how to construct highways. And the metallurgist needs to know more than how to refine copper economically. He must also be aware and concerned about the disposal of waste products. Dr. Bergeson beieves his experimentation in the science areas is inkeeping with the overall philosophy of the Honors program. He says Honors has always been regarded as kind of a testing ground for class and teaching innovations and that over the long haul, the general student body will benefit from ideas initiated in Honors courses. The U physics professor was named to the newly created post of Honors science coordinator last year because Director Richard J. Cummings believed it was time to shift from the traditional emphasis on humanities and bring more balance into the Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealers throughout the country are meeting this month with the Ford Motor Co. management to learn about the organization and programs of the new Ford customer Service Division. The dealer meetings are being held in 34 major cities where the 1,700 employee division is opening customer service offices. Ford Motor Co. is the first major U. S. automaker to establish a separate division for service. Previously, customer service was a function of the companys sales program. To maintain the U of U Honors reputation as one of the most programs in the country, Drs. Cummings and Bergeson are constantly recruiting new students and the most inspiring teachers on campus. Honors is ideal for the student who works well in an unstructured classroom situation (another national trend) and wants to be stimulated to put in more than the usual amount of class work. He does not recommend it for students who want to be told exactly what to do and who are determined to graduate from the University with a 4.0 average. Weve found that usually dont want to be in competition with other bright students but prefer to shine by themselves and make their A secure. Id bet if you took a survey of Honors students, youd find a higher percentage of 3.5 students than those with a forward-thinkin- g grade-grubbe- rs 3.9 The science coordinator says there are no snap courses in Honors, but its an exciting atmosphere that can send chills up your spine. Benton, vice president and Ford Customer Service Division general or manager, Owner loyalty customers to back Ford bringing and Lincoln Mercury dealers has become more and more dependent in recent years on the quality of after the sale service. Customer service problems have multiplied because of increased complexity of modern vehicles, a shortage of trained dealership technicians, the growing number of vehicles on the road, and rising consumer expectations concerning fast, convenient, reliable and reasonably priced repairs. He noted that despite dealership expenditure to expand service capabilities ($300 million) and a reductoin in vehicle maintenance needs (by nearly 75 per cent) since 1960, service problems have been compounded by the increasing number of two, three and four vehicle families. The U. S. Postal Service this week issued a special postage stamp to bring local attention to the work of CARE around the world. Maurice Warshaw, CARE Volunteer chairman for Utah, said the occasion marks the 25th year CARE has served as the private, nonprofit channel of aid overseas for the American people and the citizens of this area. He said, since 1946, CARE aid has reached into Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, and the experiences each year has guided the growth of the CARE package into programs that span the range of human but of needs not only food health, skills and knowledge to help the hungry feed and support themselves. In all modesty, the CARE honor is an honor for all of us. We are proud to have such an organization operating around the world in our behalf and to our great credit.. We take pride in sharing that credit with our fellow towns people, many of whom know and support the work of CARE. We congratulate them on this special recognition in our town. While weve greatly decrease the rate of failure in both products and service the number of failures experienced by the customer has increased because of multiple vehicle ownership. The creation of this new service division points up Fords serious commitment to listen better to its customers and to take responsive action to their problems. In the area of owner relations, we have two basic objectives: to strengthen the dealers ability to quickly and effectively satisfy a customer with the problem; and to help him resolve more customer difficulties early in the ownership experience thereby reducing the number of customers who reach the dissatisfaction stage. The division will launch programs in the near future that will offer dealers special recognition and incentive awards for improving customer satisfaction in their service departments. Upgrading our responsiveness to customer problems in terms of speed and effectiveness will be a primary concern of our district offices. I believe we have already taken a key step in that direction with the establishment of separate field offices for customer service, with added manpower and the ability to devote 100 per cent of their time to this complex problem.
