Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES Doctor Praises Cancer Clinics A Salt Lake physician praised the rural cancer clinics for the women sponsored by the American Cancer Society in the state during the past two years as spectacular. Dr. W. Knox Fitzpatrick, on the staff of Holy Cross Hospital, wrote in the Utah Medical Bulletin that the clinics are an efficient means to produce what we recommend, namely annual physical examinations. The Utah Division of American Cancer Society has taken a big step toward providing one of the best early cancer detection programs in the country, said Dr. Fitzpatrick. In his article he described how he had been asked to serve as a volunteer doctor for one of the one-da- y clinics at Nephi as part of the Cancer Societys Virginia Whitney Memorial Project. He noted that five other physicians, including a Nephi doctor, aided in giving physical examinations for any symptoms of breast or cervical cancer two of the most common forms of malignant disease which strike Utah women. The doctors examined some 435 women, including taking Pap smear tests which were sent to Holy Cross Hospital for processing, he said. One of the local doctors was surprised at the heavy turnout and said he had sent women there that he knew had never been to a doctor, Dr. Fitzpatrick FRIDAY, JUNE 4, 1971 South American Repertoire Told By Symphony Conductor The six great Amreican composers included in the repertoire in which Maestro Abravanel will conduct the Utah Symphony Orchestra on their wondrous tour of friendship for the U. S. Governments State Department are guaranteed to win the hearts of South Americans. The symphony poem, An American in Paris by George Gershwin, whose genius made the peculiarly American idiom of jazz symphonic, portrays the impressions of an American visitor strolling about the city listening to the noises, absorbing the French atmosphere. It is at once dsecriptive and nostalgic. Aaron Coplands El Salon Mexico uses popular Mexican tunes and rhythms infectiously, inspired directly from the real Salon Mexico, a famous hot spot in Mexico City. Coplands genius and originality did much to alter the music he found as a youth. Together with Copland and Gershwin, Samuel Barber has been one of the most played of American composers in the international symphonic repertoire and a winner of many coveted prizes for his wonderfully lyric works, the one most played of American composers is the international symphonic repertoire. A winner of many coveted prizes for his wonderfully lyric works, the one most frequently heard is the very emotional Adagio for Strings. Leonard Bernsteins Candide expresses the American point of view in a fresh way that is all his own. The overture is light Page Five and energetic. The music moves at a lifely pace with satirical humor. It has a rowdy sophistication. Ned Rorem, one of Americas most brilliant young composers, studied under Aaron Copland. His Symphony No. 3 is all about being young and loving it. Maestro Abravanel called the Symphony ingratiating, romantic and jazzy in turns. He recently conducted the Utah Symphony in the Symphonys premiere recording. Added to this repertoire of the American composers is Utah's own brilliant LeRoy Robertson, whose Punch and Judy the Utah Symphony has also recorded. The overture is delightful and jaunty and brings the mischievous puppets to life in a delightful carnival atmosphere. The musical designations evoke clear sound pjictures of the entertaining moppets. Ernest Block, the Israeli Amer ican, adds his lusty genius to Schelomo, the story of Solomon written during his Jewish period. This Biblical rhapsody for cello and orchestra is one of Blocks finest works, a composition of grandeur and intense feeling, vibrating with emotion. The Orchestra will also play selections from two of South Americas great composers who have emerged as world figures in contemporary music. Alberto Ginastea has captured his native Argentine atmosphere with the original melodies and rhythms in Variaciones Concentantes, a composition using 12 solo instruments like 12 precious gems strung on a princinple theme, and then The Litte Train to Cai-pirby Brazils Heitor Villa-Lobo- s, is an effective tone painting, South. One woman commented that she had never had a Pap smear before, although she knew that she should have, because she did not want to bother her doctor, he was so busy, she recalled. George Peeples Signs With Utah Stars George Peeples no longer is a Carolina Cougar. He nov will be wearing a Utah Stars uniform. 190 pounder, is Peeples, a the player selected by the Stars from last years Carolina roster as partial retribution in the Jim McDaniels case, it has been announced by Vince Boryla, presi-de- n general manager of Stars. Peeples even though standing has played center duronly ing his four season ABA career. Being the smallest pivot in pro basketball has about the same benefits as that enjoyed by a Kamikaze pilot. It salways the same, said Peeples earlier this year. Every season there are a couple of dudes (a favorite Peeples word) who have their eyes on my job and theyre always bigger and stronger and richer than me and they have headlines coming out their ears, but 01 Peep is always in there when shooting starts. That may not be the case next season with the defending ABA champion Stars as a man by the name of Zelmo Beaty has the center position pretty well wrapPee-pe- s, ped up. The availability of however, should enable Big Z to catch his breath a bit more in 1971-7- 2 than he did during the past campaign. A graduate of the University of Iowa, Peeples broke into the ABA during its initial year of exisetnee with the Indiana Pacers in the fall of 1967. He was with the Pacers for two seasons averaging around six points and six rebounds per game both the years as a reserve. 6-- 7, IT'S UNION PACIFIC 6-- 7, Union Pacific is a home town railroad.
