Show FRIDAY, APRIL 9, 1971 Page Twelve Real Cross Product Shows a Decline Reserve Bank Says Real GNP declined about one half percent in 1970, as a 5 per cent rise in prices offset the gain made in total output, according to the current Monthly Review of the Federal Researve Bank of San Francisco. The 1970 slowdown was marked by a substantial cutback in defense spending, by the terminatoin of the prolonged plant equipment spending boom, and by early year slump in residential construction. Employment declined also over the course of the year, as about two million people entered the ranks of the jobless. The international economy, by contrast, enjoyed a quietly successful year in 1970. The major innovations of th el960s Special Drawing Rights, the two-tie- r gold mechanism, and European integration, continued to progress smoothly. But the U.S. balance of payments was in deficit in 1970 to the tune of nearly $4 billion on the liquidity basis and $10 billion on the official settlements basis. The western economy followed the downward national trend in 1970. But as the year came to a close there were several hopeful signs in the outlook, including a comeback in the homebuilding industry. In the west, non-faremployment declined 0.5 per cent below the year before average, in contrast to a slight increase elsewhere. The aerospace manufacturing firms cut 120,000. workers from their payrolls during the year, contributing to a sharp increase in the regional unemployment rate. During 1970 wesetrn banks repaired some of the imbalances in their assets and liabilities created by the severe credit tightness of 1969. A 20 percent gain ion time deposits more than compensated for the severe outflow in the preceding year. Total deposits increased 14 per cent, exceeding the 8 per cent growth rate elsewhere in the nation and thus helped District banks to expand total bank credit by 10 percent. m if it's printing. . 4 dial 364-846- SCARLET AND BLUE THE SALT LAKE TIMES Makers List 100 Panic is to Blame Appliance Safety Tips For Stalling Car A list of more than 100 ways On Railroad Tracks of assuring safer use of home appliances has been compiled for consumers. They are contained in a new guideline, Safe Use of Appliances, issued by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers as part of its industry wide consumer education program. General recommendations are from read the instruction book to instruct children in safe, correct use of appliances at an early age as possible. Advice is also given to consumers on the safe use of specific products including dehumi-difer- s, disposers, refrigerators, microwave ovens, ranges, room air conditioners, home laundry equipment, and portable appliances such as coffccmakers and heating pads. The brief, easily understood safety suggestions place special emphasis on safeguards in connection with the fuel (gas or elec . tricity) that operates the product, on proper installation by a qualified installer, on keeping products in good repair, and on prevention of accidents related to the heating, freezing or mechanical action involved in the operation of the product. They are developed by executives, safety engineers, home economists and technical writers from 75 U.S. firms that manur facture the estimated million and portable appliances in use in American homes today. The final authority for the new guideline was AHAMs engineering, standards and safety board, a technical committee of engineering research executives from member companies. Appliance manufacturers arc continually strive to produce safe products. Design engineering departments, testing laboratories and home economics departments within each company work toward this common goal. Independent testing laboratories aer commissoined to now double check the manufacturers effort. Of all the places in the world to stall a car, the most terrifying and inexcusable is in the middle of railroad tracks when a speeding train is bearing down, warns Leo H. Barlow, the Utah Safety Council vice president for Traffic. Yet cars stalling on the tracks is a common cause of railroad grade crossing accidents, said Mr. Barlow. Panic is the only explanation. Panic is almost always the rea son for stalling in the first place and it paralyzes the ability of the driver to get his car started again in time to get off tracks. It is not unusual for occupants of a car in this appalling dilemma to freeze and thereby lose their chance to escape with their lives. He warned motorists not to hesitate if they stall on a railroad track but to get out and away from the car immediately. If no train is coming there More than 250 patterns of may be time to get the car off the tracks he said, but watch in wood moldings are available for both directions and take abso use by the home picture framer. uitasB sups Q2nft99 ma-pjo- Veterans! It is essential to establish in the behavior of the driving public the same degree of respect for warning and traffic control signs and signals at grade crossings as is displayed for signs and signals at road and street intersections. There would be no grade crossing collisions if the existing laws were obeyed. A traffic fearing motorist who will put on his brakes at a boulevard stop sign or dutifully refrain from parking in front of a fire hydrant may wheel pell-me- ll in a railroad crossing that has lights flashing, bells ringing and an, oncoming train blasting its big whistle. The reason for this is simply that it is difficult to enforce grade crossings, he said. It is easy to grow careless or fail to slow down and look for trains. It is also a good idea to check up on the driving habits of others in the family. These tragic accidents happen because drivers do not pay attention to the round advance warning sign and the crossbuck. q For a copy of the Federal source book: "Answers to the most frequently asked O questions about drug abuse write to: Drug Abuse Questions and Answers 0 National Clearinghouse for Drug Abuse Information a Box 1080 Washington, D.C. 20013 O O O a O Address:.
