Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES New Steel Design Is Lighting Way , Along Utah Roads New steel design is lighting the way along Utah highways, thanks to engineering efforts of the Utah State Highway Com- mission and Ameron Pole Products Divison, a West Coast producer of steel lighting standards and poles for highway use. Utah is going to the ultimate in safety, aesthetics and proper lighting in their new installations along interstate highways, said David MacLeod, general manager for Ameron. The Utah design for steel lighting standards is unique and, as far as we knod, a pacesetter in highway illumination. Whats more, it is using Utah steel from U.S. Steel Geneva Works at Provo. The outstanding features of the lighting units are a four-bo- lt break-awa- y base, which minimizes safeyt hazards to motorists and a tapered tube pole construction which is eye appealing. According to highway officials the safety slip base reduces enormously the collision risk in high speed expressway driving. The base connection to the foundation adequately resists the forces imposed by weight and wind on the pole, but a sudden impact from a vehicle hitting the pole causes the base to slide on its foundation and release retaining bolts, thus permitting the pole to fall away. Alex E. Mansour, chief of the roadway design division for the Utah State Department of Highways reported that In the dozen or more knock downs experienced to date, there has been only one superficial damage to vehicles and no personal injury has been reported. On the matter of aesthetics, Mr. MacLeod comments, Sometimes I think if it werent for aesthetics we would not be in this business. A tapered tube construction just looks right. When the pole design is right, you dont notice it, but when it3 wrong it sticks out like a sore thumb.
