Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1970 Mention the word anesthesiology and the ordinary citizen conjures up a hackneyed cartoon of a medic with a can of ether in one hand and a rag in the other. The cartoon is actually a statement of misinformation and irony, for anesthesiology is a complex and demanding profession. Although doctors use dozens of chemical agents to produce anesthetic vapors, they know as little about why people go to sleep under an anesthetic as country doctors did 100 years ago. All we know is that the patient is asleep and feels no pain, says Dr. Issaku Ueda, a 10 year veteran of anesthetic research at the University of Utah. He says there are many hypotheses about what happens, that there is a biochemical change or a change in the physical chemistry of the body or in its physioneurology but no one really knows. Im scratching the corner on that one now, he remarked. This assistant research pro-fessays anesthesiologists have come a long way since their counterparts knocked patients unconscious centuries ago by hitting them on the head, frequently producing brain concussions which claimed many lives. Then about 100 years ago physicians began using ether, the same time that chloroform appeared in England. But Dr. Euda says that although patient monitoring has become very sophisticated and technology has improved, there has been.no major breakthrough in theory. What is puzzling is that if a surgeon operates on a person who is in a deep natural sleep he awakens immediately. Yet he will feel nothing if he is anesthetized and we havent the slightest idea why. or . BIG-TIM- E, d. Farmers on the Maltese islands erect stone walls to protect their small but precious fields. A patient undergoing an operation is given a mild sedative in pill form and often believeh the shot which follows, usually sodium pentothal, is the final agent Actually sodium penis tothal only a mild anesthetic which is followed by a variety of chemical vapors to keep the patient unconscious. The profession is especially complicated, since all anesthetics are toxic. The surgeons are trying to cure their patients with drugs, and were administering poison to put them to sleep. Although the anesthesiologists have reliable signs to watch for during an operation, pulse rate, respiration and blood pressure, they are extremely primitive. Were still trying to find a better way to check the depth of the anesthetic. If we could measure the depth of sleep with an EEG we could develop a machine to administer anesthetics, he says, but he says there is much controversy about the accuracy of relating brain activity to the depth of sleep. The U scientist is interested in what enzymatic sequences take place before a person is unconscious. He believes that normal sleep and sleep under an anesthetic are qualitatively different. MAJOR-LEAGU- E (Send Schedule) Nixon Proclaims PTA Stars Open With Week After Lions Club Benefit Less than two weeks remain Moss Resolution Taxpayers Ask Internal Revenue Old Fashioned Ideas Wrong About Anesthesiology Today This colunm of questions and answers on federal tax matters is provided by the local office of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service and is published as a public service to taxpayers. The column answers questions most frequent- ly asked by taxpayers. Q. My children are now in school and Ive started back to work. My husband is claiming all our exemptions on his job so what should I do on mine? A. Since the same exemption should not be claimed by two taxpayers, do not claim any withholding exemptions on your job unless your husband drops them. To avoid owing additional tax at the end of the year, you may want to have your employer withhold taxes on the basis of no examptions or at a single person's rate. In many cases where both husband and wife work, not enough is withheld to meet their full tax liability. Q. Can I give my son a shotgun and take him hunting with me without breaking any federal gun law? A. Yes. Under the 1968 Gun Control Act your son may not buy a shotgun or ammunition for it until he is 18. However, this does not mean that you cannot supply him with what he 16-year-- old needs. Q. I dont understand the let- ter I got from IRS. What should I do? of- fice and explain the situation to them. Identify the leter you received so the person helping you can advise you as to what action may be necessary. Q. Some of the deductions I claimed were disallowed because all I had were checks made out to cash to back them up. I thought checks were good records? are in most cases but a check made out to cash does not indicate the nature of the expense. To substantiate an expense your records should indicate the date paid, amount and nature of expense. Q. Are GIs in Vietnam taxed on their pay? A. Enlisted men and warrant officers need not report pay received for a month any part of which they served in Vietnam. Commissioned Officers may exclude from income the first $500 of monthly pay received for service during any month in Vietnam. These rules apply when servicemen are in an area declared a combat zone. Military personnel stationed in this country, for example, are taxed. Q. I work for my room and board at college. It this taxable? A. In your situation it probably will be. The fair market value of the room and board should be added to any other income you have. If the total is $1,700 or more a tax return must be filed. Room and board would not be taxable if they are furnished on the employer's premises and for his convenience. In addition, acceptance of the lodging must be a condition of employment. A typical example of this would be a camp counselor. I am delighted that we were able to get the resolution through Congress and to the President in time for him to declare National PTA Week for this year, Senator Moss said. We had the week of October 5 in mind when I introduced the resolution, and it got to the President just in time.
