Show Page Four Weapons Research Could Help Protect Peaceful Motorists I Man-Mad- e Lakes Bring Bonanza (Continued from Page One) acres to many thousands of acres. Some of the larger ones have been created by such agencies as the Corps of Engineers and the Tennessee Valley Authority as a of dam construction. Well known among these are 252 square mile Lake Powell in Arizona, 247 square mile Lake Mead in Nevada and Arizona, and 15,500 acre Oroville Reservoir in California, which backs up behind a 770 foot earth fill dam, the highest in the world. Big lakes naturally steal the headlines, but countless smaller man made lakes make a greater overall impact. More than 5,000 watershed lakes and reservoirs have been built by local communiites with the help of the United States Department of Agricultures Soil Conservation Service in the past 15 years. Several hundred new ones are filled each year. While the basic purpose of man made bodies of water is flood prevention and soil conservation, almost all are used for outdoor fun as well. by-prod- THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1969 uct The technology of war may pay some unexpected dividends for motorists. Menasco Manufacturing Co., a major supplier of aircraft landing gear, has developed shock mitigation system that it claims reduces the chassis crush in a 26 mph rear end collision between cars equipped with the device from 17 inches that is normal with the conventional bumper equipment to essentially zero. The system is an outgrowth of research done by Menasco to design and produce shock isolators for the Polaris and missile program. Statistics reveal that some 72 per cent of accidents occur at or below 30 mph and that 42 per cent of all U.S. accidents are rear end collisions. Menasco has concentrated testing in this speed Min-utem- an range. The system was designed to be an integral part of the car, installed behind the bumpers, front and rear. It uses elastoner i highly compresible, silicone compound that acts like liquid when under high pressure. On impact, a rod like piston moves forward into a chamber filled with the compound, forcing it through openings in a damping head. The resistance to flow of the elastomer absorbs the major energy of a crash. Compression acts as a mechanical spring to return the piston to its extended condition.
