Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1968 State Goes 'Gunning' for More Hollywood Westerns Utah has begun priming for its opening shot in the annual paign to attract the motion picture industry to the state, according to the Utah Travel Council. Fay Hamblin, Kanabs veteran motion picture liaison man, will leave for Hollywood in to meet with officials of several major film companies. Milton R. Jolley, assistant of the Utah Travel Council, said Mr. Hamblin also will arrange for meetings between motion picture studio officials and Gov. Calvin L. Rampton in early April. Mr. Jolley said the governor and travel officials will journey to Los Angeles in late March to view Utahs displays in the annual Los Angeles Sportsman Vacation an'd Travel Show prior to the moaion picture industry meetings. The Utah State Industrial Promotion Commission also has invited to participate. been ' Although motion pictures have been made in Utah for more than three decades, it was not until 1967 that the state began taking official notice of the industry. Most movie promotion has been in the hands of individuals, such as Mr. Hamblin and groups such as the motion picture committee of the Moab Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Hamblin, in his 30th year as a liaison man with the industry, and representatives of the Moam chamber committee, make annual trips to Hollywood to sell the states scenery to the producers. Mr. Jolley said 1967 was one of the biggest years in Utahs movie history. Paramount Pictures made two motion pictures in the Moab area, Blue and Fade In. A United Artists production, The Devils Brigade, with a huge budget became the first motion picture ever to be filmed almost entirely in the Salt Lake area. Kanab, meanwhile, reaped Columbias McKennas Gold, and Planet of the Apes from 20th Century Fox. Parts of other movies also were made in the area. The motion picture industry left more than $6 million behind mid-Februa- ry di-rec- tir -- - Six Cents Worth Of Love on Valentine Cards Everything has gone up. lately even the cost of showing your love and affection, commented Postmaster David R. Trevithick. It now costs six cents an ounce to send a Valentine by first class mail. It also costs a minimum of six cents to send a Valentine as third class mail unsealed and without a written message, other than a signature. Therefore, if your valentine is one ounce, or less in weight, you can end it as first class mail, which entitles you to seal it, with a kiss if you wish, and add a personal message all for six cents. Up to two ounces of love can be mailed as third class mail unsealed and without any writing other than ai signature, for six cents. Over two ounces the rate is two cents for each additional ounce of love, or fraction of an ounce, up to a pound. Over one pound it becomes parcel post. , But send your love first class, at six cents per ounce and your Valentine will receive the best possible service. in Utahs economy, primarily in wages, rentals, food and lodging. This is a great inflow of money into sparsely populated areas, dependent primarily on agriculture as an economic base, he said. Television also played an important role with Daniel Boone, filmed near Navajo Lake in the Cedar City area, along with episodes of Death Valley Days and The Virginian, it was pointed out. Also Utah scenery was filmed for use in other television series and the state, particularly the Bonneville Salt Flats, was frequently used for commercials. Mr. Jolley noted that neigh- boring western states are making strong appeals to Hollywood for an increasing share of the movie business. Weve taken the film industry for granted in Utah much Page Five ested in the refresher courses should contact the division for advance enrollment. Air Safety Innovations Mark State Aeronautic Plans In the interest of greater air safety, Utah lists a number of notable new improvements in airport facilities. The information has been put together in a year end study by the State Division of Aeronautics. Foremost among the states new aviation developments is a number of new navigational approach facilities. One is located at the airport in Brigham City, another in Logan and er at Provo. One ones in Brigham City and Provo were commissioned in August and they are already credited with saving at least four aircraft. facilities such as these will also serve to encourage pilots to upgrade themselves so that they can land at the improved airports under inclement weather conditions. It is the considered opinion of the one er . - too long. The day could come when Hollywood yields to the growing public relations of such states as Arizona and begins filming its westerns outside our borders. The Utah Travel Council began working with the motion picture industry on a limited basis when The Devils Brigade began its filming in 1967, Mr. Jolley has pointed out and increased its contract with the industry as the year progressed. While the agency has no funds in its current budget to expand its work with the motion picture industry, Mr. Jolley said the Utah Travel Council .intends to work more closely with Utahns engaged in movie promotion. Check Tax Return Before Mailing Heres . .s a word of advice from the Internal Revenue Service: After you prepare your 1967 federal income tax return, it is a good idea to set it aside for a day or so and then give it a good review before you mail it. District Director of Internal Revenue Roland V. Wise said the Utah taxpayers who heed this advice often find omitted income or deductions or errors in arithmetic. A review of the return may also disclose that the taxpayer failed to provide his address and zip code, omitted his social security number or listed it incorrectly, did not attach all copies of Form W2, or forgot to sign the return. This review will be time well spent as it may prevent delays in processing the return and will speed up any refund due, said Mr. Wise. Mr. Wise further pointed out that this year the error statistics indicate a substantial number of refunds are being delayed because some taxpayers are using the incorrect table, line or even column, and making errors in tax computation. v r.-- r. i . t .- i c ) t . r You always can. 7 Crown always has the same great taste.
