Juab When the new 1968 license plates are mounted on cars of the nation, the residents of three more states will have given thmeselves an extra chance to stay alive on the roads at night. The new plates for Montana, Idaho and Washington are fully reflectorized, due to action by their legislatures during 1967. This brings the total of states using these plates to 31 with the Texas plates due to become reflectorized in 1969. 'A fully reflectorized safety plate is covered with millions of tiny glass beads that bounce the headlight beams of approaching cars back to their drivers, making the plates, and the cars on which they are mounted, visible for more than a third of a mile down the road. Tests and statistics in many states have proved the accident reducing qualities of reflective plates,, showing that they can reduce rear end collisions at night, when most such accidents occur by more than half. Sixteen years experience with reflective plates in Maine has shown sharp declines in rural accidents after dark, despite a 155 per cent increase in total rural accidents. Illinois reported a reduction in rear end accidents for 2,425 in March and April, 1965 to 2,380 for the same period in 1966, the first year that state issued the plates. The drop occurred despite an over all increase in all accidents from 51,666 to 55,766 for the same periods. In a one year study of parked car accidents in Polk County, (Des Moines) 60 per cent of the areas cars were equipped with reflective plates. If the plates had no accident reducing qualities, three out of every five cars hit in such collisions would have had reflective plates. But of the 326 cars struck while parked at night during the year, only 78 has reflective plates, about one out of five. The study estimated that 622 parked cars would have been hit if no reflective plates had been used in the study while only 130 would have been hit if all the cars in the county had been equipped with the shiny plates. This much added protection for night driving is well worth the small extra cost, equivalent Vaccine May Prevent Rheumatic Fever Medical researchers at the University of Chicago have developed a vaccine which may solve the problem of rheumatic fever. The vaccine is designed to prevent streptococcal infections which frequently lead to rheu-mtai- c fever in children or to a kidney disease in both children and adults. It is made by purifying a protein called the M protein from the cell wall of the strepticocci which cause the infections. The body responds by making antibodies against the M protein. Thus when streptococci invade the body the antibodies react with the M protein and help destroy the invading organisms before an infection begins. Two of the researchers who helped develop the vaccine, professor Eugene N. Fox and Dr. Albert Dorfman of University of Chicago, said that from 300 to 500 children, in areas where there is a high incidence of the fever, will be immunized during the coming year. Prof. Fox said that of 25 infants who were immunized dur-n- g the past year in Chicago, none had any untoward reac-oand no side effects have )?cn apparent.
