The hospital units are expensive, numerous areas are without the equipment and hospital treatment is too costly for many. Now, according to Dr. Willem J. Kolff, dialysis can become a family affair at a cost most families can afford. Dr. Kolff was appointed as a professor of Surgery at the University of Utah College of Medicine in June, 1967. The Univer- sity announced recently the receipt of approximately $200,000 from the U. S. Public Health Service Bureau of Disease Prevention, for the first year operation of a Home Dialysis TrainThe project ining Center. volves the development of a coordinated program for the treatment of patients with terminal renal failure, under Dr. Kolffs direction. In the past patients with kidney failure have entered the hospital twice a week for 6 to 8 hours of blood purification using a dialysis unit. The machines are large and expensive, approximately $6,000 to $12,000. Under the new grant Dr. Kolff and his staff will help patients acquire a modified washing machine for approximately $350, and the patients family will be trained to use this dialysis unit at home. According to Dr. Kolff 45,000 persons die each year from kidney disease. Hospital facilities have not been extensive enough and too expensive for many patients to use the equipment. This should be the beginning of a program whereby anyone who needs the help can get it, stated the affable medical researcher. The first year of operation will provide valuable data for the program. Home dialysis is not new to Dr. Kolff and his staff. While in Cleveland, Ohio, just prior to his assignment at Utah, several washing machines were put into use in patient care. Dr. Kolff, himself, was the first to develop a clinically useful artificial kidney back in 1943. Federal Government Allocates Tax Funds Some $395,000 has been allocated to the state of Utah by the Department of the Interior for fish and wildlife restoration propects according to Senator Frank E. Moss of Utah. He said the money will be available to Utah this month. Funds will enable Utah to be reimbursed for up to 75 per cent of the cost of approved projects. Utahs share of the slightly more than $20 million available nationally is based on the number of paid hunting and fishing licences and of the size of the area served by the restoration projects. Thirty-fiv- e potential volunteers will arrive August 2 on the Logan Campus to spend three months learning Spanish. This special program of intensive Spanish has been designed by Dr. Thelma Fogelberg, professor of languages at USU, in conjunction with Spanish-teachinexperts from Peace Corps. Dr. Fogelberg spent a week in a special training seminar in Easton, Maryland, visited the Foreign Service Institute in Washington, D.C., and observed training at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire in preparation for this intensive three-wee- k ar pre-regul- g course. The group of Peace Corps trainees who will participate in the special three-weecourse come from three different programs. Some are teachers or nurses who are destined for service in Central America. They will undergo regular training at either San Diego State College or Los Angeles State College following the USU short course. The others are slated for work in Bolivia and will remain at USU for their regular training from August 25 to November 3. They will be joined on August 25 by additional Peace Corps-men- , bringing the number for the regular USU program to 45. These trainees will be divided into two groups and trained in either agricultural extension skills or credit union and cooperatives organization as well as understanding, Latin American history and politics, United States social problems, governmental organization and overseas operations. The trainees for Bolivia will become personally involved in the techniques and skills of community development and relations under the guidance of Dr. Glen Casto, USU psychology department. Emphasis in the program will not be on the traditional lecture-liste- n system of learnon the actual doing of but ing, and projects learning through personal involvement, said Dr. Doyle J. Matthews, program director. We plan to give the trainees some chicks when they first arrive and have them personally responsible for raising them throughout the program, stated Dr. Matthews, then toward the end of the program, we will teach the trainees how to kill and dress chickens and have a barbeque. Peace Corps has awarded Utah State a $138,000 contract for the two Peace Corps training programs. We want to put down roots and become even more involved in Latin America, said Dr. Daryl Chase, USU president. Beginning August 2 the roots go deeper. k cross-cultur- inter-person- al al ARTHRITIS-RHEUMATIS- M Do claims and double tallc make you doubt you can get any relief from arthritic and rheumatic pains?
