Show SHOTS FROM THE MOUNTAIN By KEN TUTTLE Conservation Officer Utah Fish and Game Dept r. The past weekend has been what vacationers or hunters and fishermen call a long weekend This happens when a holiday either comes on a Friday or on a Monday B Be e cause of these 1 extra days alA allowed al al- A lowed a away way 1 from work a lot lotof ri t ti g of people get t S J out and hit the l road t jj t t The archery ill il rr t iZ r and morning 51 i. i d dove o 0 v e seasons Mr l Tuttle opened Saturday Saturday Satur d day y morning and because of the good weather it seems that more than the usual amount of f people took to the country and the mountains I tried bow hunting a little while Saturday morning I saw several nice buck deer but didn't get any good shots Iwas Iwas I Iwas was hunting with Don Tibbs who drove four nice big bucks in my direction In my attempt to crouch down close to the ground to get out of sight an accident happened to the seat of my britches The strange sound of the stitching giving away these deer and spoiled my chances of a real good chance to get a close shot I can easily understand why this sport is gaining gaming in larity I have hunted with shotguns shotguns shot shot- guns and rifles ever since I Iwas Iwas Iwas was old enough to hunt and andI I have been proud of my ability ability abil abil- ity to shoot but since I have tried hunting with a bow and arrow I r realize that this type of hunting requires more than just aiming a gun and squeezing squeezing squeeze ing the trigger In the first place you have to stalk you game You have to learn to use natural cama cama- study air curren currents ts and wind direction You even have to check your own BO closer than at a social party In my estimation the greatest greatest great great- est challenge confronting the modern bow hunter who is out outto outto outto to get his game is to be able to get closer to nature You have to really study and observe ob oh serve the natural placement of or both the animal and its hab hab- After you have become proficient at blending in with nature and know how to take advantage of what conditions you are confronted with you then rely upon your training in the use of your weapon and know its capabilities The bow hunters that I have checked and talked to and especially the successful ones are really proud of their ac ac- ac Of all the hunting sports that your Fish and Game Dept controls there is less grumbling and complaining from the unsuccessful unsuccessful hunter They appear to be grateful just for the opportunity to get out at this time of year for this type of hunt A few personal tips tips' for bow hunters Until you are skilled at cam cam- and know nature better better bet bet- ter hunt in a party and try and drive the deer to each other others Make sure your arrow points are real sharp this is very im im- important In the arrow has to cut cutto cutto cutto to kill Dont Don't smoke or build aDY any fires This alerts the game and could start a fire with results If you hit one wait a while and let it stiffen up Your chances of getting it will be greater w |
