Beckstead Award FRIDAY, JANUARY 28, 1966 Commission Decides To Let Demos Name New Sheriff Salt Lake County Commission has requested the Democratic State Central Committee to resolve the question of who shall be Salt Lake Countys new sheriff. At a special meeting this week the commission failed to agree on a successor to the late Sheriff George W. Beckstead. The commission agreed to ask the central committee to suggest a name. At a meeting this week Com mission Chairman Marvin G. Jenson submitted ' the name of Delmar L. (Swede) Larson for the post. But the two other commission members, W. G. Larson and John Preston Creer, declined to vote. The commission agreed, how ever, to submit the question to the central committee. Mr. Jenson said he hoped the committee would meet in two weeks after hearing from all potential candidates for the job. "We expect them to give us the name of one man, not several to choose from, Mr. Jenson said. ' i ' Attorney Leonard Elton flamed To New Third District Judgeship Leonard W. Elton, Salt Lake attorney and long active in the Democratic Party in Utah, this week was named a Third District Judge by Gov. Calvin L. Ramp-to- n. The new judgeship was created by the 1966 special session of the Legislature. The appointment cannot be made officially until March 20, effective date of the legislation creating the new judgeship. At that time there will be eight judges for the Third Judicial District, which is comprised of Salt Lake, Tooele, Summit, and Doggett Counties. Mr. Elton is a native of Salt Lake City and a graduate of West High School and the University of Utah. He received his law degree from the University in 1934. From 1936 tb March 1942 he served as deputy Salt Lake County attorney.' He was president of the Utah Young Democrats in 1940.
