Show Eradcation of TB Is Research Goal The ironic disclosure that preliminary legal proceedings are now being taken against Adolf Hitler could help the U.S. resolve its indecision over South Vietnam. West Berlin District Attorney Hans Guenther has just disclosed that legal steps are being taken to assure that Hitler can be tried in the unlikely event that he pops up after the statute of limitations on Nazi war crimes runs out on May 8. Hitler has been officially declared dead and the evidence that he killed himself in his Chancellory bunker April 30, 1945, is considered overwhelming. Even the Russians have rn poses. But everyone has been vinced of Hitlers death that no legal steps were ever taken against him until this month. For on May 8, 20 years after the Nazi surrender, War Criminals may no longer be tried unless some form of legal proceeding was them before that opened against ' date. West German authorities do not think Hitler is alive, but add think of the fuss if he did pop up and got off scot free just because we could not try him. so con- Similar preliminary legal are also taken steps being against the still missing and unaccounted for Martin Bormann which is doubly ironic. The key Hitler deputy and Nazy Party leader disappeared from Hitlers besieged bunker without a trace just before it fell into Russian hands. His body has never been found, despite exhaustive searches. There are recurrent rumors that Bormann, whose son has become a monk, is still alive. The double irony of all this attention row being given Nazisms two top leaders lies in the fact that it was just 20 years ago this week that Bormann finally persuaded Hitler, beseiged in his underground bunker, to record his views for History on the Second World War. Hitler knew at this point that the war he came close to winning, now was lost. His views (disclosed after analysis and verification only in 1961) are the closest we may ever come to probing the mind and tactics of a modern-da- y Attila the Hun to discover why he plunged the world into war. They are full of blaming Jews and others for his plight, may be blatantly deceitful. But they are the views of Hitler speaking frankly as he ever did with no effort to sway the masses and admitting for the first time in his life that he ever made mistakes. And in any event, Hitlers bunker views during February 1945 are the closest we may ever come to probing a warmakers mind. He declared that he should have waited twenty years to develop men molded in his (Nazi) ideal to wage the war which would have meant that Hitler would just be starting the war he began in 1939 in 1959 had he lived and with greater prospects for victory. On the other hand, he also suggested that he might have begun self-pit- y, his war too late. Hitler said from a military point of view, it would have been better to fight in 1938 not 1939 over Nazi conquest of Czechoslovakia rather than Poland, since the added year gave Great Britain and France time to develop their defenses. Hitler explained that he attacked Russia primarily because he felt the Soviets would attack him first. He regretted that America had come into Hie war he regarded primarily as a crusade against Bolshevism, had sought to persuade the Japanese to attack the Soviet Union or the British Far Eastern colonies rather than the United States. And finally, with Russian shellfire bursting above his bunker, Hitler declared himself to be Europes last hope to stem the Communist tide and that his defeat would mean tragedy for Europe and the world. It is easy to dismiss Hitlers political gifts as negligible, to regard his as a mere opportunist and disregard his evil genius. But how many of those who do so can honestly say that, with the war not yet over in 1945, they could see the future as clearly? For Hitler warned With the defeat of the Reich and pending the emergence of the Asiatic, African and perhaps the South American nationalisms, there will remain in the world only two Great Powers capable of the confronting each other United States and Soviet Russia. The laws of history and geography, Hitler added, will compel these two powers to a trial of strength, either military or in the fields of economics and ideology. These same laws make it inevitable that both powers should become enemies of Europe. And . . . sooner or later . . . seek the support of the German people. . . . Had American policymakers seen the world so clearly, they would have been more prepared for the Cold War with the Soviets, the emergence of the Asiatic, African and . . . South American nationlisms and the Yellow Peril Hitler called the Chinese whom he said would one day threaten the United States. Hitler in his final ramblings, also provided insight into how wars may be won or even prevented. To those who felt they were appeasing Hitler, he denounced as spineless dupes who eased our way toward war. He declared that his power had come from his ability to take advantage of his enemies weakness, division and indecision more than his own strength. As Hitlers power crumbled and his empire sunk to a few Berlin city blocks overhead, he reminded Histoiy that he would have retreated time after time if (he) had been confronted with real strength and determination at any point during the war, a valuable guide in dealing with the Red Chinese in South Vietnam and the rest of Asia now and Russia as well. . ad- mitted that they recovered Hitler's charred body when they captured the bunker, that Hitlers dentist identified the teeth as Hitlers and that they kept these facts secret until 1963 for propaganda puranti-Weste- THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 1965 Page Two Although Utah has one of the lowest tuberculosis death and infection rates in the United States, discussants at a recent TB course at the University of Utah College of Medicine agreed on the necessity of a cooperative and coordinated effort toward complete TB eradication in the State of Utah. Franklin Brough, executive director of the Utah Tuberculosis and Health Association said that lifetime medical supervision and follow-u- p management of all infected or potentially infected TB patients is essential in blocking the spread of the disease. He reported that the U.S. Public Health Service, in cooperation with the Universitys College of Medicine, the State Department of Health, and other agencies bluehas mapped out a five-yea- r conmore toward effective print of concentraTB trol involving tion of all available resources in the fight for complete eradication of the disease from this state. The study showed that single males in the area, over 50 years of age were the most common people to be affected by the disease. Virginia Cole, R.N., tubercu-los- i nursing consultant for the Division of Preventive Medicine of the Utah State Department of Health, noted that TB education must be repeated again and again if it is to be effective. She added that nurses must be responsible for the continued treatment and supervision of the TB patient. non-hospitaliz- ed bmooth, head-huggin- g cheek curls and bangs are a must for the forward-lookinfashion-consciowoman of 1965.
