Show Page Twelve Coast Guard Alters Regulations on Lifesaving Devices New Study Finds The THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, JANUARY 1, 1965 Pill is S?fe If Used Properly Findings of a closely supervised medical experiment involving Enovid, the .worlds first birth control pill, with more than 10,-0women in 38 American communities participating, and the computerization of hundreds of thousands of pieces of medical and scientific data, have been disclosed. The findings support the judgment of panels of eminent physicians and research scientists set up by the federal government in some instances, the developers of the pill in others, which held Enovid safe for long term continuous use. The experiment, financed by G. D. Searle & Co., a Chicago medical research and prescription drug manufacturing organization, and conducted by physicians in 38 Planned Parenthood Federation clinics with knowledge of the U. S. Food and Drug Administration of the technique and ground rules to be followed, has been known by the women participating as the 25 month club, since only those women who had been using the pill for 25 months or longer were admitted to the tests. Of more than 10,000 women currently participating, records on the first 5,000 have now been analyzed by computers, and the findings on them can now be 00 reported. Dr. Irwin C. Winter, Searle vice president medical affairs and director of clinical investigation, made the report known before leading government and industry chemists at a meeting , in Washington of the professional chemists society. Dr. Winter said, Enovid, because of the rapidity of its acceptance by the medical profession here and abroad and its use by millions of women in their family planning, has been subjected to extraordinary scrutiny. Continuing studies by independent clinical investigators, starting in 1952, have not disproved our concept of the safety of the pill. One of the most difficult of such studies has been that of thrombophelebitis since adequate statistics of its normal incidence were not available. On attempts to determine . All of the various investigatory panels concurred generally in one finding: that no causal relationship appeared evident, but that additional clinical experience under closely supervised conditions was desirable. ' Women were selected for the test by the Planned Parenthood Federation provided they had been users of Enovid for at least 24 months. On joining the experiment a woman was given a medical examination and her medical history was taken to shoy her condition both prior to taking any medication and during the past two years or more on which she was on Enovid. After her admission to the experiment each participant was examined and then interviewed again each six months when certain basic medical tests were repeated. Thus, the experiment undoubtedly represents the most comprehensive large scale study in the oral contraceptive field.
