He gave a fine speech, comparing life in America with life in less fortunate parts of the world, and thus stressing the . necessity for pride in America and our way of life. makes a fine platform appearance, and his voice and syntax are good. He admitted later that he is seriously considering making a bid for the seat in the United States Senate being vacated by Senator BenHe nett. It is probable that if I were to come down out of these hills and file for the United States Senate, Jake Garn would defeat me. HOWEVER I have a great deal more hair than he has. Further, my platform appearance is good when I remember to suck' in my gut and my voice and syntax are okay if you dont mind a few squeaks. Here and there. GEORGE ROMNEY , I have not met. He has always made a good impression with me and I suppose he would make a good Senator. Certainly he would not have to bust a gut to take the place of Bennett, who has been resting on his seniority far too long. But Romney doesnt live here. Should I move to Michigan and file for the Senate or something? Ive probably got cousins on the wrong side of the tracks in Detroit. What more could Michigan ask? And besides, George is even older than I am. If the voters insist on somebody who has been through the mill, how about me? I already live here. It was quite a disappointment (and here Im not kidding) to realize that Gov. Calvin B. Rampton meant it when he said he wouldnt run for the Senate. If he changes his mind, he can have my support. JAKE GARN will probably be the candidate. I wish he were personally of a more warm and outgoing nature. Lets face ake lacks charisma. But he has a grand family. So take me again. It seems like porches went out of style when the pace of living speeded up. Nobody has time to sit on a porch anymore. I think back to an old porch swing where one could sit on a quiet evening and listen to the crickets and smell lilacs and watch the night grow 'deep and let thoughts wander far away. I remember when the family would gather there and visit and sing and be happy together. I remember sitting there and . Jack was a nephew of Mrs. watching the summer rain splash on the steps. Now I have a porch of my own to sit on and watch the world go by. Its like having a familiar old friend close by. There ought to be a law that no house can be built without a porch. Every little girl should have a porch to play house on. Everyone in the world should have a porch rail to put their feet on. Somehow it gives one a feeling of importance. Maybe the county will put a section in their new zoning ordinance stating all houses must have a large porch.
