Show Over th' County Agent's Desk J. Reed Moore Consider Environment in Christmas Tree Use Consider the environment and safety in use of Christmas trees this season, urges Carl M. Johnson, Utah State University Extension forester, and J. Reed Moore USU Extension Agent. In view of the in- -: creased emphasis on environmental problems, we as citizens of the land can do the following things in selecting, using and discarding Christmas trees to avoid or minimize bad efThey said, fects cm the environment: If possible use living trees and establish them later in your own yard or surroundings. When using cut trees try to find a subsequent use instead of burning. (They can be used in gully plugging or other erosion control projects. They may be scattered as wildlife habitat im- provement or shelter or chipped for mulch or other later use.) The idea of holiday Christmas tree safety also should be upper most in all of our minds. Keep the tree moist (keep base in water) while it is indoors. Keep it away from sources of heat or fire. Be sure electrical' cords and lights are not sources of fire. (Do not use cords with bare wires and do not let light bulbs contact tree foilage.) is Still Handling Solid Manure Best Method Stacking and handling manure in solid form and spreading it on the soil is still one of the best and most economical methods of manure disposal, declared Spencer H. Daines, Uta State University Ex ten- - sion agricultural engineer. He noted that the problems encountered with properly or safely storing and spreading liquid manure and daily spreading of solid manure have led to a growing interest in stacking manure for temporary storage until it can be spread on the land to best advantage. . clean-o-ut and stacking manure does not worsen fly control, but it does make pollution control easier than daily spreading. This was reported in a recent article by W. L. Gojmerac of the Department of Entomology, University of Wisconsin. His field study of fly production indicated that wet feed under mangers, dirty manure gutters and calf pens generate more flies than do manure piles. Participants at a recent Livestock Waste Symposium held at Ohio State University came to the conclusion that manure piles need not be anything more than an eyesore. With proper planning this disadvantage can be overcome. The shortcomings of daily spreading, such as unnecessary cost, odor, flies and other problems of environmental pollution have led us to look more closely at some of the benefits of piling manure. In the pile the manure partially decomposes, shrinks, improves in texture and loses some of the more objectionable odors, Daines said. He added, A manure pile doesnt necessarily generate flies or other nuisances if the following elements of good management are Phone 783-446- gflman 9 FRIDAY and SATURDAY Dec. 10-1- 1 James Stewart Manure 1.
