There is a tendency to accept without question any statement or assertion that fits in with what the individual wants to believe. Moreover, there is a lament-ai- de determination on the part of too many to pursuade everyone to fall in line with whatever is being peddled. R is a good idea for us, once in awhile, to carefully consider the stubborn Independence of die hardy citizen who has the nerve to look the majority in the face and say, despite die popular flurry, 1 don't. agree! More of such individualism and thinking is needed. r: Ed-so- Lisa Fitzgerald, Julia Clint Wilde, Julia Lambert, Arnold Crystal. Helping others is an old American tradition. When we see someone hitchhiking along the road -- perhaps a young man who could be on his way back to college -it's our natural inclination to stop and offer a lift Unfortunately, it's a dangerous inclination. Time and again, the generous gesture of a motorist has turned to tragedy, with robbery, assault or murder the reward for a lift along the road. N.A.D.A. safety experts estimate it happens nearly 100 times every day. The message Is clear. Don't stop to pick up a stranger. A hitchhiker's appearance is no Indication 4 of his character-- or intentions. In addition to the risk of robbery or attack, there is danger in stopping sud- denly for a hitchhiker when other cars are on the road behind you. We want you and your family to be safe whenever you travel by car. So next time you see a hitchhiker, leave him be. You'll still be doing someone a kindness. Your family and yourself.
