Vocational rehabilitation is a program to help persons in overcoming physical, mental, or behavioral disorders that handicap them In competing for employment. Its objective is to prepare these persons for employment through which they can provide a living for themselves and their dependents. Counseling and guidance are provided on a basis throughout the rehabilitation process by a professionally-traincounselor. An Ined dividual diagnosis Indicates the nature and extent of the disability and the activities the applicant is capable of performing. Work evaluation and adjustment consists of examining a person's work potential and helping him or her to prepare for a job. Physical restoration reduces or removes a handicap through medical, surgical, or other therapeutic measures. Artlflcal limbs, braces, hearing devices, and psychotherapy are examples of such measures. Job, training provides the Individual with a skill. Training may be obtained at a vocational school, college, university or through training. Expenses may be paid while the disabled person is being prepared for work, or being helped to find a Job, through cooperative basis of numerous state and private agencies when necessary. Other goods and services essential for employment are provided as needed. Job placement is the goal of vocational rehabilitation. Follow up assures that the disabled person Is adjusted to his new occupation and has overcome any problems. Who Is eligible? Persons with physical or mental disabilities that handicap them In their efforts to engage in normal work activities are usually eligible for services. People served include those with amputations; visual, hearing, heart and back problems, or other physical disabilities.
