Or if not Weber State, which I choose as an example because it happens to be in my home town, imagine that such occurrences took place at the University of Utah or Utah State or Brigham Young University or at any other institution of learning in the state. It is hard to imagine, of course. And it is highly unlikely that events of this kind could or would occur at our Utah schools. BUT for arguments sake, let us assume that this type of lawlessness did break oid on a Utah campus. My question is: how should responsible officials react to it? My own strongly held convictions are that physical force, in whatever amount necessary, should be Immediately employed by appropriate law enforcement agencies to suppress the activity and place its perpetrators in custody. An example, it seems to me, of how not to react to lawlessness on the campus occurred at Columbia University in New York City last week. The events described above did actually take place at Columbia. Five major campus buildings, including the administration offices, were taken over and held for several days by agitators. The dean of the college was held captive by them for 24 hours. that is The hoodlums-a- nd exactly what they are, make no mistake about it broke into the office at the universitys president, Grayson Kirk, and wantonly destrpyed personal mementoes, defaced photographs, rifled his desk and files and carted off or destroyed whatever they took a mind to. These students even urinated on the carpet in the office. R is difficult to understand conduct of this kind even when and the only stupid people. Really, worst of savages could be expected to act in such a manner. But this didn't occur in the Jungle. Scow exchanged wedding vows Saturday evening April 27 at the Kamas Cultural Hall. The impressive double ring ceremony was performed by Bishop Delbert Marchant and witnessed by close friends and relatives of the happy couple. Following the ceremony the wedding party greeted friends and relatives at a reception. The bride wore a floor length gown at nylon Chantilly lace over net, her veil was shoulder length with open crown. She carried a bouquet of pink roses and orchids. Her sister Barbara was maid of honor and she carried a pink and white carnation bouquet as did the bridesmaids. They wore pink cotton brocade dresses and white slippers. The reception room was decorated with spring flowers and ribbon form in ga semi-circ- le where refreshments were ser- ved to a large crowd. And it was carried out by young adults who supposedly have an understanding of right and wrong. After all, they were bright enough to get into Columbia, which has exceptionally high entrance requirements. But what is more difficult to understand is how officials at the university could permit this ugly situation to continue without taking positive steps to bring it to a halt. The buildings were actually held by the lawbreakers for several days. True, the officials attempted to negotiate. But you simply do not negotiate with hoodlums. What you do, it seems to me, is move in with sufficient force to overpower the wrongdoers and you cart them off to Jail. And you insist that proper criminal charges be filed against them and that they be brought to trial for their crimes. period. 4: Forbid father to enter the kitchen until the kids are gone. No fighting over who Furthermore, you make it clear that future misconduct of this kind will meet with a similar uncompromising response. It is inconel ivable to me that reasonable and responsible academic leaders would consider doing anything else. I am not an authority on Columbia University. I did not attend there, nor have I had any particular association with the institution. Whether the student protest that served as excuse for the riots was well founded or not I cannot say. But I do know that grievances in a civilized society, of which university life is supposed to be an epitome, must be resolved through lawful means. If university policies are wrong, there are lawful ways through which they can be righted. And even if there were not, wlien is there ever Justification for doing the things that were done at Columbia? Somehow in this country weve gotten the idea that violence is protests working partner. Where we acquired the idea I do not know. But the sooner we disabuse ourselves of this foolishness the better. In fact, if we dont do so soon, our civilization will lie in ashes. And I do not say this lightly. After all, how much longer can we be per .missive aboutthe senseless tearingdown of things that it has taken us so long to build up? As a former member of a college faculty I grieve at what has happened on some campuses. This anarchy has gone as far as it can be permitted to go. It is our opinion that if the money is spent in the areas The projected the educational opportunities for the students of North Summit will not be greatly improved. The oily way to greatly improve the educational opportunities for the students would be an entirely new school with South Summit and Park City participating. We would like to be sure that hope for a new school is completely gone before the proposed bond issue at North Summit must be decided. Remember that the building project at South Summit and the one proposed at North Summit are designed for a Junior High School program. A new high school for North Summit, South Summit and Park City is coming, the only question is when and where. Building at North Summit will further delay a new school for probably 15 years or more. Is consolidation a dead issue? Are we considering our own selfish desires instead of the betterment of education for our children? Has South Summit, fay building, ended consolidation for years? Could Park City Join us now and together could we build a new school? Would the legislature help us in financing a new school? Will North Summits building influence the choice of location for any future consolidation? Is U true that we will have to settle for three $1,000,000 patches on three old schools and still end up with three schools that wont have the educational or financial advantages of one? We dont have the answers to these questions and we should have them before we as teachers and parents can make an educated and informed decision on how to improve our schools. If a complete new school proves to be out of the question, Coalville, Utah Thursday, May 9, project at North Summit when a quarter of a million dollars was spent in the physical education department. lets spend our money where it will do the most good.
