Those words could well be the most appropriate epitaph to be placed on the tombstone of this Republic. Billions of tax dollars have gone into the coffers farmers and of well-to-d- o rich corporations through indulgence in the same cynical amoral philosophy: Everybody else is getting it, why not me? It's easy for those of us who .were not flooded to moralize and rationalize, you say. But it so happens that we lost thousands of dollars worth of antiques in our antique shop which was under five feet of water. I can get, I am informed, $5,000 in cash, free from the taxpayers, and can Once upon a time, the was the soundest, most respected prophets called for and American dollar needed more than today. This currency in the whole world. The popular reference to age needs Jeremiahs to tell the it was "Good as gold, which it truly was. You or anyone truth, the whole truth, please or could exchange paper dollars for real gold. Not so were fearless, resolute, BELMONT, MASSACHUSETTS whole-soule- d displease, dungeon or no dungeon, mire or no mirel" ' W. J. Toronto, Canada anymore. Gone, too, is the respect and confidence that our currency once enjoyed. Recently, European bankers refused to accept dollars in trade. Travellers abroad report that dollars can't be spent everywhere and, if they are accepted, their value is markedly reduced. What has happenend is a sad story. We pick it up in the 1930's when President Roosevelt removed gold backing from our currency. It continued as president after president allowed foreigners to exchange their dollars for our gold, but refused the same exchange to the American people. Found Dead Dear Editor: Last week a United States Congressman was found dead in his barn, killed by a gunshot wound in the chest, apparently His death and his funeral received less attention than would the accidental shooting of a polar bear in the Arctic regions. It was almost impossible to learn anything at all, except the repetition of the words "apparent" and "apand the fact that parently" "foul play was ruled out." Congressman William Mills, Republican from Maryland, had an ACA voting score in the 92nd Congress of 93 out of a possible 1001 Voting scores for Senators and Representatives are comself-inflicte- d." piled The sickness of the dollar accelerated as deficit spending became the rule. And in 1965, President ACA by the i Voting scores for Senators and Representatives are compiled by the Americans for Constitutional Action, and they are very significant, for they reveal a Congressman's support, or lack of support, of constitutional principles. Are we really to believe that such a fearless man would hide in his barn and shoot himself in or the chest with a shotgun even, for that matter, harbor a desire to accept money from a group that by its disgraceful conduct over many months has shown its utter contempt for the Americanist cause? Un-thinkab- Johnson administered a knockdown punch when he engineered the removal of silver backing from our currency. He even removed silver from the coinage so that we now use 3 cent quarters and 1 cent dimes. Since 1965, our paper money reads, "This note is legal tender for all debts public and private.'' It formerly said "Redeemable in gold on demand'' or "...silver payable to the bearer on demand.'' But, now all you can exchange your paper money for is other paper money, or increasingly less goods and services. It sure would be interesting to find out where all that gold and silver went! At the end of Germany's Weimar Republic in the 1920s, a bushel basket full of paper marks wouldn't buy a loaf of bread. The currency had no backing, but the German government kept right on printing it until the German people arrived at an inescapable reality: the paper marks were worthless! As a result, savings and many investments were wiped out; commerce was crippled; jobs evaporated; and the resulting chaos set the stage for eventual totalitarian rule. It is always comforting to assume that the German experience can't happen here. But there is no reason whatsoever to believe that we are immune. In fact, the only element keeping us from sharing the same fate is our national lack of awareness of the real worthlessness of our currency. Should we close our eyes to the situation and hope for the best? Of course notl The real cure for our fiscal sickness is a cessation in deficit spending, a return to precious metal backed currency and an honest program to pay off our national debt. If we embark on such a program we will quickly see a return to respect for the dollar, an end to inflation and its crippling effects, and a stregthening of our nation's independence. If we do not adopt the measures called for , our leaders will shortly propose the adoption of United Nations currency and, with it, the all but formal end to our sovereignty. Like virtually all the other thousands of flood victims, I knew our building was subject to flood. Nobody made me buy it and nobody made me risk the elements there. Why should the taxpayer bail me out? Or more realistically, why should I be a party to the impending bankruptcy of our government?
