Dear Editor: Many in the J. Reese Hunter Editors Outlook Great Society have been asking for this recipe for SERFDOM (I might add that this recipe has been tried and tested many times and has never failed yet.) Select one large, or small, nation, if you can find one readily. Then. add several educated communist sympathizers, eggheads, liberals, and beatniks, sift, and mix well with the masses. (Proceed slowly at this point, as these ingredients may prove combustible.) free-enterpri- Revenue iflXetf Sharing Linked to Constitutional vis. NlXort reliance for money is being placed in the federal government. To further destroy them, President Nixon has divided the country up into 10 regions. This new governance is designed to replace the city, county, state, and school district systems. Each region is composed of a consolidation of states. Utah is in Region VIII with its capitol at Denver, Colorado. Region VIII is composed of Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Amendments Wyoming. With the help of Utahs state and local politicians, federal Revenue Sharing is going to become a fact of life. Both Utah Senators, Bennett and Moss, along with Congressman Sherman P. Lloyd, voted in favor of Revenue Sharing. To his credit, Congressman Gunn McKay voted against it. To our knowledge, Gunn McKay has been the only elected official to openly take a stand against it. It has been vigorously endorsed by Mayor E. J. Jake Garn of Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County Commissioner William E. Dunn, and others. Bob Wolthuis, Republican Congressional candidate from the 1st District, has endorsed Revenue Sharing. His opponent from the American Independent Party, Dr. L. S. Brown, opposes it as does A1P candidate Bruce Bangerter, one of Sherm Lloyds opponents in the 2nd District. Some people have asked what some of the things Revenue Sharing will do in the ensuing years. We of the Utah Independent wish at this time to go on record in predicting the future effect it will have upon us and our country. Revenue Sharing will raise everyones taxes. It will do this both by a direct raise and indirectly through inflation. Local politicians will be constantly pressuring and begging Congress for more and more. Since local governments will be on the payroll of the federal government our local politicians will no longer be as beholden to their local areas for government finance. We can expect them to thumb their noses at us as they dance to the tune ordered by their The people will not be able to do anything to federal masters. hold taxes down because their local officials will pretend they do not have anything to do with it. Actually, the local officials, working through the Council On State Governments, the Governor's Conference, the National Legislative Conference (all tied in with the Metropolitan Government Metro network headquartered at 1313 E. 60th Street, Chicago, Illinois) etc., will be lobbying groups for bigger and bigger government spending and higher and higher taxes. Through these same groups our local officials have already lobbied to get Revenue Sharing passed. These groups (paid for by the taxpayers) have created, in effect, one of the biggest and most powerful lobbying groups in the country which will demand more government programs. State and local governments are in the process of being destroyed. They arc becoming less effective all the time as further Idaho is in Region X with its capitol at Seattle, Washington. Region X is composed of Alaska, Oregon, Idaho, and Washington. By Executive Order No. 11647 the President authorized the staffing of the ten regional capitols and appointed a chairman or commissar for each province. He has, in effect, created a new form of government in the United States wherein officials are appointed, not elected. All that was need to bring the local elected officials into line was to .sucker them into accepting the idea of the federal government supplying the money to run the local governments. Their greed has caused them to rush blindly to the bait which they have swallowed hook, line, and sinker. The Revenue Sharing bill even goes so far as to allow the federal government to collect the taxes for the local governments if the local governments express such a desire. The bill provides that this can only be done, however, after the state government brings its income tax program into line with the federal government. Thus, we now see the hidden reason for the recent effort in the Utah Legislature to make the collecting of Utah taxes conform with the federal government. Supposedly, it was to make it simpler for the taxpayer to figure his tax. Actually, it was a program which was to prepare the groundwork for what was coming after the advent of Revenue Sharing. The concept of the federal government collecting the taxes for the states is being sold by the tempting idea that it will save the state governments the administrative costs involved with collecting taxes. If that does not work, it is a sure bet that there will be further inducements to get the state governments to let the federal government do the collecting. Bit by bit, piece by piece, we are creating a new federalism as President Nixon said, with the federal government holding the purse strings. The consolidation and Metropolitan Government movements in Utah are part of the overall program to create one government, having power to appoint our officials rather than the people electing them. The proposed Utah Constitutional amendments to be voted on in November would carry us further down the road to Regional, Metro Government, and eventually to World Government which would be socialistic in form. Therefore, the proposed Constitutional amendments ought to be rejected by all people who love their liberty. Revenue Sharing, Metro Government, consolidation of governments, and the forthcoming Utah Constitutional Amendments are all one ball of wax. The people of Utah had better beware. Once more, they are being set up for the kill. This time it may be the final coup de grace. pre-plann- ed 1 (Watch for more on the proposed Utah Constitutional Amendments) by the Utah independent each Friday at 1399 South 7th East, Suite 9, Salt Lake City, Utah 84105.
