Hill Article from a Sweedish Newspaper Editors Note: The following article was published March 12, 1971 in Arbe-tare- n (The Worker), which is a weekly Swedish newspaper with anti-Morm- on approximately 10,000 circula- tion. The article ms translated by Brian L. Manwaring of Pocatello, Idaho. The title was, VJoe Hills Minne I Salt Lake City, which The Remembrance of means, Hill Joe in Salt Lake City. In Industrial Worker, the official publication of the American syndicate organization, Inter- national Workers of the World, Gary Cox gives a picture of how it i$ in our day in Salt Lake City where Joe Hill was executed on the 19th of November, 1915: Not much has changed in the beautiful Salt Lake City since Joe Hill was executed there, at least not much has changed for the better from a workers point of view. The Mormon Church and the copper barons have, if it is possible, an even stronger grip on the reins of power now than they have had before. The church holds you down while the copper company takes your money. . . . The air in the valley is dark yellow from the pollutions that are vomited forth out of Kenne-cot- t Copper Corporations smoke stacks. The smoke is so poisonous that the birds cant survive it, but the Mormon Church eases its nervous members with the line that Christ is soon coming and then, of course, there will be no reason to worry about such worldly things as poisonous factory smoke. Kennecott, in its turn, challenges its employees to go to church and pay tithing. Not even the Mafia could arrange high in Salt Lake City, and the strike could be a long one. Joe Hill Day was set up to make the town a little more conscious of the history of the worker movement. For some strange reason, Joe Hill is not found in the historical writings of the State of Utah. The day before I arrived, some youths from the group We, the People had gone to the mayor of Salt Lake City to get the name of Sugar House Park, where the prison in which Joe Hill was executed had stood, changed to Joe Hill Park. But, of course, the mayor couldnt even think about going along with anything like that. Naming a park after one of the heroes of the worker movement? In the State of Utah? Governor Spry would turn over in his grave! The next day Kathy Collard and I appeared in a local radio broadcast, and Kathy did a good job of explaining why the name of the park ought to be changed. Afterwards a woman called on the phone and explained that she had a degree in literature, but that she had never heard of a poet or a song-writby the name of Joe dont Car--' that we honored Joe Hill and be- succeeded in creating a little bit of anxiety among the higher social circles of Salt Lake City. I believe well hear more from this city in the future, especially if they can get the food store cooperative going well. The meeting was held to remember Joe Hill, but we didn t sorrow we organized! lieve the carpenters were prepared for the agitation they heard. Nearly 150 people had assembled, most of them young and people, but also middle-age- d older. One veteran from the lumber camps on the west coast was also in attendance, Albert Mikesell, member of IWW since 1918. We - ate spaghetti, played guitars and gave speeches. Posters about IWW and Joe Hill were displayed everywhere, and there was no lack of literature on IWW. Gradually, we assembled into smaller groups to discuss the revolution! On the whole, I think recent A phone isnt working. This is a person speaking. Navy Captain - We wish you the er Hill! However, it doesnt look like the Mormon Church or the copper company believes that Excellence Christs second coming will be next week, since both are eagerly engaged with investing in new businesses and in new building programs. In 1969, Kennecotts profit from Utah hit 80 million a figure which was dollars exceeded significantly the year after. It is harder to say how many millions the Mormon Church has swindled from the population, but it is easy to see that the workers in Utah are caught in a vice. But things are beginning to change. When I climbed off the train in Salt Lake late in the evening, I was met by a group of young peop?. One could hear a rumble and the ground shook a little under my feet. What in the hell is that? I asked. Its the young in Salt Lake City, rising in anger, I was assured.
