THE CORROSIVE EFFECT Continued From Page 8 But all of this was counted as just so much balderdash by Dr. G. Brock Chisholm and his fellow Freudian psychologists. They considered the fixing of so much personal responsibility on the individual as n code to be that required of the totally unbearable. Chisholm called the moral laws a crippling burden of good and evil a pattern of outmoded types of loyalties, and outgrowth of the magic fears of our ancestors. The same sentiment was echoed by Dr. Heinz Hartman when he declared: Acting according to self interest is, then, considered more 'healthy, more rational in a general way, more legitimate than acting according to moral principles. It is presented as the result of having conquered successfully the archaic taboos of earlier days. (Freud Anniversary' Lecture Series for 1960, p. 76) Note that there always seems to be a bitter tone of ridicule designed to relegate the whole subject of morality to oblivion. It is consistently portrayed as an obsolete relic from the Dark Ages the "archaic taboos of earlier days! n The religious or divine origin of the Code which makes a moral violation an offense against heaven turns out to be particularly resented by this school of thought. At the 67th an; nual convention of the American Psychological Association, a Dr. Ellis emphasized the point when he said: I contend that giving someone a sense of is the worst possible way to help him. The Virginia Declaration of Rights stated, That no free government, or the blessing of liberty, can be preserved to any people, but by a firm adherence to justice, moderation, temperance, frugality and virtue, and by frequent recurrence to fundamental principles. The Massachusetts Bill of Rights passed in 1780 said the same thing. In his famous farewell Address, George Washington spelled out the complete dependence of the American system on its foundation of religious morality. Said he: Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are the indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labour to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens. The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicity Let it simply be asked where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths, which are the instruments of investigation in courts of justice? And let us with caution indulge the supposition, that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience, both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.
