This defiant announcement was made by Mark Rudd, SDS National Secretary and leader of the Columbia University riots. He said it on August 30, 1969, while being interviewed on TV station WJW, Cleveland, Ohio. This statement marked the top of the stairs and the end of the road for SDS. The Students for a Democratic Society were set up in the early 1960s as a deceptive front organization behind which exposed, n Communist youth could carry out their orders from CPA headquarters in New York City without being suspended or expelled from second-generatio- school. However, SDS was valuable to the revolutionary groups only as long as college administrators accepted it as a legitimate medium of student concern for the solution of Americas social problems. The sponsors knew that the moment SDS was exposed as a power center for subversion it would be dead. And that was the moment of reality which was finally reached in the summer of 1969. But by that time the damages which the SDS had perpetrated against hundreds of colleges and high schools was astronomical. These students who had promised college administrators that they were nothing more than ardent advocates of participatory democracy turned out to be dedicated enemies of everything for which American democracy stands. The SDS finally emerged as a rag-ta- g legion of violent, obscenity-spoutin- g guerrilla warriors. The big question immediately confronting college administrators was this: Why werent we smart enough to see this in the beginning? Why did it take over fixe years of rioting, burning, bombing, kidnapping, and the disruption of hundreds of college campuses to expose the fact that SDS was a school for guerrillas and Red Guards? The answer is embarrasing. It was a combination ol ignorance and iron-cla- d apathy. self-impos- ed For The Finest In Pets And Pet Supplies Dogs-Cats-Birds-Tropi- Fish cal -- Aquarium Supplies-Complet- e Ever Dream Of Feeling Alive?
