Computers and Conservatives J. Reese Hunter University of Utah Shall we add two and two? The "biggest political operation in the history of the University," Participation 70, recently got underway at the University of Utah. Under the joint auspices of the Legislative Relations Committee and the Hinckley Institute of Politics (director, Dr. J.D. Williams), it is a project wherein every student of the University is placed by a computer onto a special list according to where he lives. The computer categorizes the students according to the voting districts in which they live. Then by a series of telephone calls or letters, the indivi-dau- l student is urged to reveal his political party preference and other personal information as to his political interest Supposedly, then, those who express the greatest "interesf are urged to get supporters and attend their Mass Meetings for the purpose of getting elected to delegate spots so as to influence the nomination of party candidates. We would be willing to wager that if a student expressed a liberal bias he would be showing the proper "inIf he expressed a conservative preferterest" ence he would probably never hear from the committee again. After the mass meetings and party conventions these same students will help candidates campaign for office. Students Funds Used The Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU) voted $3500.00 to advance this program. The computer used was presumably one of the unt, iversity's under the guidance of Dr. William J. professor of computer science. We don't need a computer to add two and two. In explaining "The Real Purpose" of this program, Dr. J. D. Williams said as follows, "The fundamental question in life is will politics govern you or will you control politics?" Perhaps in asking that question Dr. Via-van- d Williams was revealing a personal ambition of his own, namely, to control politics. If that is true, he has found the makings of the vehicle to accomplish this purpose. He has the ready-mad- e crew of youthful students, the financial resources of the ASUU, the facilities of a large university, and a built-i-n position of leadership by virtue of his teaching position and directorship of the Hinckley Institute He is in an ideal spot to control and of Politics. shape the thinking of those he is teaching. After all, to a great degree, our young people are products of what they are taught deep-seate- Conservatives But, we think there is something more to this program even than this. Is it possible that the University Administration is using Participation 70 to, itself, influence the local political scene? Is it possible the Administration has launched a personal vendetta against conservative candidates who have opposed the policies of the Administration?
