Show April 19, 1968 THE EUREKA (UTAH) REPORTER Page Four Tom turkey hunt opens April 27 Many changes made and marks set in Y Invitational Track Meet Thirty years ago the Invitational Meet drew 3,123 contestants in 163 events. This year, as officials ready for the 55th annual meet, the number of contestants will be slightly more than it was 30 years ago, and the number of events will be slightly less. According to Floyd Millett, chairman of this years spring sports extravaganza April 25, 26 and 27, more than 700 individual entries have already been received and recorded. The bulk of the entries will be coming in next week, Millet explained, and we expect to have the total figure surpass 3,500 by the time they are all in. While the number of yearly contestants dasn't fluctuated much in the past 30 years, some of the other changes associated with the meet must be regarded as dramatic. Using past records and current marks as a performance average, the present junior high and high school star easily outdistances his counterpart of 1938. The mile is being run eight seconds faster and the half-mile four seconds faster. The high jumpers are soaring four inches higher, the pole vaulters are vaulting a foot higher, and the discus men are throwing the discus beyond the best throws of 30 years ago. While all these marks underscore the vast improvements being made in the best marks each year at the Invitational, there's one change that might be called a social trend. Back in 1938 the schedule of events included girls track and field events; dashes, jumps, the works. But today the high school girls are confined to one 28-fe-et spectacular event, the girls' pep clubs on review. We havent heard any com BEER-to- ast plaints on this change, meet official observed. A number of changes have taken place in BYUs annual Invitational Meet since the first one was held in 1911. But theres one area thats ed fairly constant ber of contestants. 27, num- BYU gridders name captains A trio of BYU football standouts were tabbed by their team mates for additional leadership duties this week when the Cougars elected team captains for the 1968 season.
