Club SEATTLE OHCAOO gram MW TOM san tumciko NEW YEAR CALLS FOR NEW LOOK The new year calls for a new look. The Korean reverses have left us gloomy. The immediate future appears threatening. The prospect calls for honest appraisal and clear thinking, not for panicky discour- y agement After all, the United States continues to be by far the happiest, richest and strongest of nations. We shall have no need to live in fear if we will make wise use of our strength. Strength means many things. Right now it means military power armed force so mighty that it must be feared. Military power includes agricultural and industrial ability to produce more and more food and Consult County Clerk or tha KesM'tivr Signers for further Information Portland, Oregon, says he grew up to young manhood with a dreadful inferiority complex which was the result of lack of education and realized it. He was so afraid of meeting educated people that he couldn't enter a restaurant or even go to a soda fountain for a drink without suffering agony. When he saw someone approaching who he knew had had advantages that had not come his way, he would cross over to the other side of the street. As he grew older, he knew this mental attitude would handicap him all his life. Hut how to overcome it? lie realized that he had to go out among people, so he finally brought himself to accept an invitation to join a fraternal order. As he entered the door, the first time, he almost wished it would close on him before he could get inside. After the first time, it came a little easier to mingle with the other members, but he didn't really enjoy it, and when a meeting was over, he made for home as fast as he could. It wasn't long before he was appointed to a minor position. But he dug in, did what was expected of him, and apparently what he did was thought to be good, for in what seemed to him an incredibly short time, he was next in line for head of the lodge. When he realized what would be expected of him as the head, he became panicky. What was he to do? He knew he couldnt speak on his feet. Working quietly was one thing, but talking in public that would be CHATTER The next "Mr. and Mrs. radio to come your way may be the Duke and Duchess of Windsor . . . It will be titled, appropriately enough, "Day With Durochcr." A new song, eulogizing the late Al Jo Ison, will shortly be published. Our first national duty, therefore, must be to shape American strength into irresistible armies, navies, and air forces. We cannot afford to continue illusion that we can protect America g the by buying friendships abroad. We dare not shrink from the overshadowing fact that Communists intend eventually to conquer the United States if they can. They will conspire within our borders, steal our secrets, lure us into bloody, exhausting wars with their slave countries, trick us into wasting our strength ; if they must, and when they dare, they will attack us directly. We are fighting for survival as a nation, and for every American liberty and privilege we possess. If1 we use our great strength prudently, we shall win. Their people out number us, so we must avoid wasting SHORE our men. We should quickly adopt means to organize manpower, such as Germans and THING Japanese, under our leadership. At home, we should insist that Congress squeeze IlY every possible waste out of government, and spend SAM only for power. There was but one thing to do if he was to conquer that awful complex: join a class in public speaking. Hut the class was too large for everyone to speak each time, so the members volunteered when they wanted to speak. The first time he volunteered to speak, he became almost petrified with fear. When he was appointed as head of the lodge, he suffered every time he spoke. He got through it somehow, and before his term of one year as head expired, he had begun to enjoy it.
