These discharge to the Gemini Cave on the 1800 level. Both sets of pumps are automatically controlled from a central control panel on the 2300 level. The automatic features control the water level in the sumps, start pumps after power failures, and change pump systems in the event of failure of the operating system. During the period from 1942 un til 1948 the Chief Mine was dewatered from thc( 1860 levels to the 2500 level, anil new developments carried the workings an additional 235 feet downward to the 2735 foot level - 915 feet below the original water table. During this period, apmximately 500.000 tons e ores were produced. of The total flow of water into the mine is now 3700 G.P.M.: which amounts to about 70 tons of water pumped to each ton of ore extracted. The seasons have no apparent effect on the quantity of water .entering the mine. The amount of water developed is not proportional to the depth sunk, blit is more nearly proportional to the distance opened laterally on the lower levels. I .oral structures affect both the level and the quantity of water encountered, but the general effect of the pumping ia to rompletely every flat d area radiating from the pumping point. When the water was lowered 700 feet in the Chief Mine, records show that the water was lowered 200 feet in the Grand Central Mine, approximately one mile to the south. Little more is known about the effects of the pumping on other nearby areas, as surrounding mines are not developed below the original series-connect- ed 18-4- MALUEABUEW FACTORY COOPERATION SALE Now in Progress! de-wat- er 18-4- LOOK WHAT YOU GET? At the present time, the mine rould flood from the 2700 level to the 2300 level without damage to the ptimp-in- g system. This gives a leewav of several days in whirh the pumps could erase to operate before flooding, an interesting rompsri son to the avatem used In 1927. when the lowest pumps flooded i (very few minutes after stopping In December. 1948. a test for re-- i circulation of water from the Gem Ini Cave to the Chief Mine was made by the use of sodium fluor-- , esoein salt whleh stands at the top of the list of ehemicals and dyes used for tracing underground wa ters. Fluorescein has a redish orange color, hut when dissolved in water and diluted, appears brilliant green Under light, the water solution fluoresces a brilliant green. One part of fluorescein In 40 million part of water is visible to the nsked-eye- . lone part In 400 million parts of water is easily detected under the light, and with sperial rare, one part in 10 billion parts of wstcr can be detected hv the aid of lung glass tube. Eight kilograms of fluorescein salt were added to the water discharged into the cave and water samples taken at regular intervals at various points in the mine over a period of several months. No trace of the fluorescein was found in the mine water. The right kilograms of fluorescein added to the discharge water at the rave is enough to pollute the total amount of water pumped in approximately nine months Numerous tests wrrr made to determine If rnntact with snv known minerals nr rocks In the Tinllc District would weaken or dcstmv the fluorescein color, and nothing was found that would affect the color determinations It is felt thst this test substantiates Combination GAS Gas & Coal Combination Cool & Wood : Monarch Makes I I Them All! !
