Superintendent Blight presented to the board for One contract was ratifiratinn. with the Regan School District of White Pine county, Nevada, and the other contract was with the White Pine county High School District. These contracts deal with the education of children living in the extreme western end of Juab county. By a unanimous vote both contracts were accepted. Letters of applications for positions around the school plant were received and ordered filed. Alden Childs discussed the condition of the Ford bus with the board, and Superintendent Blight was instructed to start negotiations for the disposal of the same. Preceding the regular board meeting all members present met with the members of the Eureka Kiwanis club and heard Theodore Haynes, president of the board of education, and Superintendent Blight give reports on their recent trips to Atlantic City. Mr. Haynes gave an Interesting, humorous and detailed account of the many places visited and sights seen to and from Atlantic City. While crossing Illinois they stopped at Nauvoo and Carthage. Mr. I laynes explained how Nauvoo had deteriorated and how the door hail been damaged during the murder of Joseph Smith at Carthage. He also gave an Interesting account of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. This road is six lanes wide and can be traveled for 160 miles without stopping. The speed limit is supposed to be 70 miles an hour but, said Mr. Haynes, "We were traveling between 50 and 60 and they were passing uf like we were standing still." Mr. Haynes told of visiting the 8tock Exchange Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller Center, Empire State Building and Times Square. He said "sometimes Alex complains about his leg, but believe me he beat me to the top every time." The meetings at Atlantic City were an inspiration to all." said Mr. Haynes, "and impressed everyone about the wonderful opportunities that existed for board members and the big part they play in molding the educational forces that are the cornerstone of our democratic institutions." Enroute home they stopped in Washington, D. C., where they visited the National CspitoII. Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, George National Masonic Washington Memorial, and Mount Vernon. Mr. Haynes said It was a real thrill to watch Arthur Vanderburg preside over the Senate and to visit all these historic places. Supt. Blight spent the major portion of his time discussing speeches that were given at Atlantic City. One of the outstanding speeches was given by Walter II. Judd, a member of Congress, snd Republican from Minnesota. Mr. Judd spoke on the subject. "America's Expanding International Role." In this speech he discredited all actions of the Russian government and explained to the audience why the Marshal plan was a necessity. He said: "If China and Asia are not to be free, then It would have been better for us to have them under Japan, than under Russia. If China Is not to be free, then the war against Japan was not only useless, it was criminal, because we are left with less security than before." Omar )!. Bradley, chief of staff of the United States Army, spoke on the subject, "Security Belongs To You." General Bradley spent the major portion of his time explaining how the United States two contracts ferring the Initiatory degree upon 4 eleven candidates. Postmaster Denton has received a letter from the Post Office Department, Inspection Krvice, office of Inspection, Salt him to warn j.i, city, onasking the scheme which is the people known as, "The Spanish Swindle." The scheme, according to the letter sent Mr. Denton, works in the form of a letter, supposedly amt from Mexico City to a person in the United States. It states that the sender is in prison from bankruptcy and he asks for help to save a huge sum of money, which he says he has in hnfc bills in a trunk. The sender .v other favors and to compensate for all he offers to give a third part of the said sum of money. The letter is signed "M" until the sender learns whether or not the person who receives the letter is interested, then he will be entrusted with the secret and in the meantime he is to answer to an address in Mexico City. The whole thing is a hoax, the postmaster warns and should persons In Eureka and nearby receive such letters they should know that it is just a swindle. -- ta'con-compete- nt , Operate |
