Show Utes return to Meeker, Colorado STANDARD Roosevelt, Utah Thursday, April 15, 1971 For the first time since 1881 a large group of Ute Indian peopla returned to Mee- mra ker , Colo., scene of the Meeker Massacre and Milk Creek Battle. The result of which was the removal of tha Utes In a sad exodus to the desert country of the Uintah Basin. The return of the Utea was a happy experience as SO students from West 1SSB) 33331 - -- Mr, and Mra, Ira Winkler were here during the week visiting with relatives. They came to attend the funeral services of Otto Uoyd In Roosevelt. -Mr, and Mrs, Boyd Goodrich and family, Sprlngville, Mr, and Mrs. Drew Goodrich and girls, Mr. and Mrs. Morris Goodrich and 2 sons of Clearfield, Nell Stevenson of Price and Mary Stevenson of Bountiful were visiting here over the Easter holidays with Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Goodrich and Mrs. Sylvia Goodrich. - -- Mrs. Val Timothy and daughter of Granger visited one day at the John Goodrich home and with the Fred Mathews family. here with Mr. and Mrs. Bernls Bristol on Saturday were Mr. and Mrs. Theron Atkinson, Mrs. Arva Bruno, Mr. and Mrs. Ike Atkinson, Mr. Heber McNeil, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Bates and the former Zora Page and her husband, all of Kamas. They especially came to attend funeral services of Leland Potts at Al- LI son bee and and Michael Mary daughter of Heber and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Llsonbee and his new baby son of Elko, Nev., were visiting at the home of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Llsonbee over the Easter holiday. They especialy came to see their mother whom had undergone surgery at the Duchesne County Hospital. Visiting here at the Bernard Winkler home Sunday of last week were Mr. and Mrs. Verland Turner and her daughter Gloria and son, and Mrs. Thelma Cook and Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Cook and family, all of Salt Lake. They also visited In Roosevelt with Mrs. Zelma Lloyd. Among those attending the group of Seminary students to go to the Salt Lake Temple to do baptismal work from Bluebell were Greg Todd, Kaye Seeley and Eve- CEKimramra Mr. and Mra. Those going to Salt lake Friday to go to the Temple were Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Winkler, Mr. and Mrs. Udell Winkler, Pauline Winkler and Mrs. Maxine Todd. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Goodrich and 4 children of Salt Lake were visiting here with Ralph's parents, the Owen Goodrichs. Douglas Todd was playing basketball and he accidently fell Into the brick wall on the outside of their home and cut his ear which required stitches. Mr. and Mrs. Hal McDonald and family were weekend guests of her parents, the Ross Monsens. Sherrie Hanberg spent the weekend at home with her parents, the Cecil Han-berSherrie goes to school In Ogden. Easter Day guests of the LaVon Atwoods were the Merlin Fenn family and Mr. and Mrs. Gene Berrett and girls of Salt Lake. Visiting at the Wallace Seeley home over the Easter holiday and spring vacation were Dal and Bea Seeley and three children of Taylorsville, the Duane Young family of Sandy and the Alma Rlchmans of Provo. The Rlchmans attended awed-din- g reception In Roosevelt for the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Rlchman. Dale Giles returned home Saturday from Heber Hospital where he has been receiving treatment from a car accident since last Wednesday. Mrs. Ginger Casper and Kristy visited Bonnie Mezenen Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Dennlsen and family from Sandy were Easter guests at the home of thlr parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jess Jensen. Roy Moulton and children were guests at the home of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Larue Pickup. The Moultons live at Salt lake. Mr. and Kirs. George Pickup and two boys, Tulelake, Calif., visited friends and relatives In Randlett over the week- OBEBGf! CEE ttl Junior high school, Roosevelt performed for an Assembly program at Meeker Senior hlghschool on Wednesday, AprU 7. Parents, members of the Ute Tribal Business Commltte, Uintah School District personnel and Bureau of Indian Affairs representatives accompanied the students and participated In the program. This was a Title I project under supervision of Grant Drolllnger, Uintah School Norms District Title I Denver directed the program assisted by Phyllis Oberhansly, Ellen Rawlings and Loralle Crittenden. Faye Jensen of Uintah Basin Standard and Deseret News correspondent also accompanied the group. Students from the Junior and Senior high schools In Meeker as well as a number of Meeker residents enjoyed the beautiful costumes, the songs, dances and legends of the Ute students. A copy of the bode, Ute People, an Historic Study was presented to each school Principal for library use by Principal Norwood Hardy of West Jr. high school. Francis Wyasket, Chairman of the Ute Tribal Business Committee presented a Ute made to the Mayors representative, peace-pip- e Robert Pearce, saying, "The Utes return In a spirit of friendship and good will". Mr. Wyasket was assured then that "the city of Meeker wUl always welcome the Utes and the door wUl always be open". Superintendent Stanley D. Lyman of BIA at Ft. Duchesne spoke briefly. He Is the first BIA Superintendent to return officially to Meeker since the Massacre of Superintendent Meeker ninety years ago. Students were given some Ute crafts as souvenirs. Marietta Reed spoke for the parent group and said "We have no regrets about leaving Colorado now, we like Utah". The students had a chicken dinner at the Junior Ugh school, toured the Historic Sites in the area and visited the Museum. Trips like this one are available In TIUe I schools to help Improve student's self concept, to stimulate an. Interest In School Districts Ute History project. The program presented by the students at West Jr. high was enthuslastlcallly received and an Invitation to return with another program was extended to the group. Mr. 3W QlC and Mrs. Don Harvey, Orem were visitors last week at the John Harvey home. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Goodrich, students at BYU spent the weekend at home with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Haslem and the Rae Goodrich's. Susan Simmons, Jean Haslem and McKee went to Meeker, Colo., Thursday with other students from West Jr. high to present program. Orson Harvey and son Kevin from Morgan visited Friday at the Farrel Simmons home. Mr. and Mrs. Gene Wiliams and baby from Salt lake spent the Easter weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Gena Wallace. Mr. and Mrs. Reid Goodrich and Juan made a trip to Missouri last week. - -- Barbara Goodrich has received word from her husband, Randy Goodrich that he la stationed at Fort Ord, Calif., and will take his basic training there. Mr. and Mrs. Farrel Simmons have received word from their son Elder Aaron Simmons that he will be released from his mission In two weeks. Elder Simmons Is currently laboring In Lexington, Ky. Visitors over the weekend at the Charles Gllnes home were Mr. and Mrs. Max Warren and family, Ogden and the Orlan Oman family from Altamont. Visiting with Mrs. Elizabeth Morrill over the Easter holidays and spring vacation wre Mr. and Mrs. Horace Morrill and children from Pocatello, Ida., and Ralph Morrill and two sons, Dick and Bart from Tulelake, Calif., Mr. and Mrs. Norwood Hardy visited Kirs. Morrill Saturday. Babies blessed In sacrament meeting Sunday was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Harvey who was given the name of Kelly and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Gllnes who was given the name of Debbie.
