Show SHOTS FROM THE MOUNTAIN By KENNETH TUTTLE Conservation Officer Utah Fish and Game Dept 0 OUTDOORS Most of us will have to agree that we dont don't spend enough time outdoors We do donot donot not get enough good physical exercise and our actions and examples are encouraging our children to follow our easy way of doing things We consider riding in an automobile getting out but there is the exercise and deep breathing that are lacking There is just no substitute for forgetting forgetting g getting out and taking a nice brisk walk or hike It is amazing amazing amazing ing how many school children are deprived of walking a few short blocks to get to school and if it is slightly cloudy or foggy the parents are there thereto to pick the kiddies up to take them home to watch sion i What a change has taken place the last few years I listened with disgust a few days ago to some parents who were complaining because the S' S school bus stopped at an intersection inter inter- sect section on one block further away from their children than from their friends Lets Let's hope that our schools are putting a little more emphasis on physical physical physical cal education other than just training a few boys to play basketball Some of my fondest memories memories ies les are from little experiences I had traveling to and from school It didn't take us long to learn the shortest distance between two points was a straight line and we soon had short cuts and generally without without with with- out the consent of the property property prop prop- erty owners That is how I first learned the meaning of the word Trespass It was nothing unusual to see some student co come e in to class late and walking sideways to hide a tear in m his britches due to a anew anew anew new barb wire fence that appeared appeared ap ap- ap unexpectedly over over- night There was a pole fence we had to try and walk so far along A picket fence to run runor runor runor or walk along holding a stick and seeing how fast we could go and still coUI t the pickets In the spring there were all kinds of shrub and tree blossoms blossoms blossoms blos blos- to pick and take to our school In the fall there were certain apple trees that raised apples that none can compare with now days In the early spring we would break twiggs off box boxelder boxelder boxelder elder trees and when the s sap p flowed and froze into icicles we had our first What price automobiles and television I heard one parent praising television because it got the kiddies in off the streets after school What distorted distorted distorted dis dis- dis- dis thinking They haul the kid kiddies dies to school feed them sch school ol lunch so they wouldn't have to walk home for lunch and back to school then mee meet t S them after school and hauled them home and praised television television television tele tele- vision because it enticed them back inside and deprived them of a little outdoor exercise and recreation What kind of ofa ofa a future generation are we going going going go go- ing to end up with if this continues continues continues con con- |
