A decision was made during the past week by the basketball coaching staff at Union high school which has certainly shaken residents of the Basin, and which has been the topic of conversation by nearly everyone since the announcement was made. It is well conceded that the move will eliminate Unions chances for the state basketball championship, which many people felt could have materialized. It is also felt that the action will have an effect on future teams at Union. On what basis was such a decisive blow warranted? What were the implications involved? How does the decision affect the future athletic program at Union? These questions are on the lips of many as they review the events of the past week. In order to satisfy these quir-ie- s in our own mind, we endeavored to get some background on the problem. It was found that the present situation began approximately one year ago. At least two team members were found in violation of training rules, and after considerable deliberation, and a stem warning of the outcome should this practice continue, the players were allowed to complete the season. Training rule violations were the cause of several boys being eliminated from the track team last spring. Rule violations also became a problem during the football season last fall. As the basketball season startBevell stated that he felt Coach ed, the need for a clear understanding between players, parents' and coaches as to the course of action during the current season. A meeting of players, parents and coaches was held December 1, 1965 at the school. At this meeting, various eligi- bility rules and requirements were outlined, but only two hard and fast training rules were set down, the violation of which would constitute grounds for elimination from the team. It was decided by the group present that the use of tobacco or liquor in any degree would bring dismissal of the player involved. Because of the history of the violation problem, players were made to understand that no warnings would be given. Violation of rules would eliminate the player. When a violation was reported last week, an interrogation of all players found 10 of the 12 admitting rule breaking. Two players admitted violation on only one occasion, three stated that it had been two or three times, and five admitted that training rules had been broken more than three times. When were the first violations committed (including those players participating only once)? According to reports, it was on December 14 following a banquet honoring the football team, held in a neighboring community just two weeks after the eligibility rules were explained to the boys. A meeting was called last week with parents and players. Parents of seven of the 12 players were represented, as well as the chairman of the Duchesne County School Board. Again it seemed to be the concensus of the group that the rules should be adhered to. At the meeting three of the team members, voluntarily withdrew from the team. Friday afternoon, Coach Bevell made the decision to drop seven other members from the squad, as well as two managers. Certainly the degree of violation varied. Should the boy with one violation be handed the same punishment as those with many? Of course this will always be a question with some. But, where else could the line be drawn? The rules, agreed upon by all stated that violation constituted dismissal. Maybe the players who slipped only once could be reinstated. However, what about those involved only twice? Or three times? They hadn't been reported, nor given a second chance either. The players understood the rules, however, and these rules did not say that after two, three or more infractions they would be dropped. They stated that any infraction would constitute dismiss- Assessor Luck clarifies rule on inventory La-De- 59-2-- 17 USED 59-5- -4 that took quarterinventory in 1965 may file Busin eases ly j The annual meeting of the Duchesne Commercial Club will be held at the club Jan. 27 at 8 p. m., announces Howard Mecham, club president. The coach did not dismiss the boys in and of himself. They were the ones who made the decision when they decided that a couple of minutes of fun was more important to them than their position on the basketball team. Who will be hurt most by this action? Is it the players who possibly had a future in athletics, or at the least will carry with them the fact that they let themselves and the school down? Or would it be the parents, who continually strive for the best for their children, and are sorely hurt when such an incident occurs? Perhaps the school will take the brunt of the blow. Certainly a stigma will cloud the school until it can be removed by unspotted conduct on the part of students in the future. Or maybe even the coach. He has been working with many of these boys for three years, with the realization in sight that he had the possibility of playing in state championship competition. No one can say what the repercussions might be. We feel, however, that in order to build character in our schools that the action of the coach was necessary. The course for the future is clear. We must take what we have and build upward. Certainly any course in an upward direction, no matter where we start, is better than the course that was being followed. It certainly isn't the end of the world for the boys involved. Their infractions, for the most part, were minor, and need not carry any stigma of conviction. They will the need help and encouragement of all of their associates if they arc to realize their full potential in our society.
