Show r v THE CITIZEN t SPENT FORMER PARTNERS SAL ARY IN ADVERTISING. U years ago a man whose product today is internationally known and sold by more than four thousand retailers, had a partner who got cold feet and vamoosed. Instead of getting another partner, he decided to spend in advertising the amount which the former partner had Thirty-thre- e K been drawing in salary. I Advertising expenditure became a fixed expense of the business. It was spent regardless of whether business was good and profits high. It didnt always come out of profits, because at first there were no profits. Advertising from the beginning was regarded as an investment in estab-- 1 lishing and maintaining a business in which the founder had the fullest faith. This is the best case we have ever known where advertising was consistently used as a side partner. : j ) A man who is as good as gold but a little slow in his payments, reminds me of a horse that could trot a mile in 2.30, but is a little lame. I put a little less money on him in every race. An order for 100 pounds of flour--j came by telephone from Berlin, Ger- many, to an Omaha milling company the other day. . The profits from that order will pay telephone bills for a long time. The flour will be shipped more than 5,000 miles, and some one has figured that it represents the put of 350 acres of wheat land. 1 out- Paris recently had a Generosity Week but she forgot Uncle Sam.
