Every, citizen of our fair state who has made a trip to California has had the same experience. When you come away from that state you certainly know all about it even if you havent traveled over but one small portion of it Enthusiasm has done more to build that glorious state than either climate or mon- BOOST IN PRACTICE. Not only was that big mass meeting held in the Tabernacle in Salt Lake but mass meetings were held in every town in Utah- The children prepared essays for the day. If you cant boost your state, at least dont knock it. Just keep still. A knock always goes further than a boost and we have had far too many knockers here. It isnt nearly so necessary to raise money to advertise Utah to the world as it is to instill enthusiasm in the hearts of her own people. If everybody living in the state had a firm conviction that this was the best place in the world to live, that it had all the advantages to be found anywhere else, every town would take on a new appearance in a short time: Utah would grow by leaps and bounds. Prosperity would abound everywhere, for there is no question but we have everything to make prosperity. Enthusiasm and loyalty are needed in Utah more than anything else. Utah is the logical jobbing center of the intermountain west. It should be the hub in the western wheel for all roads lead to it. Our factories should be able to supply Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, and a large portion of New Mexico, Colorado, the Dakotas, Washington, Oregon, California arid Arizona with products manufactured in its factories. We are not doing it, however. We are allowing the manufacturers and jobbers of the middlewest and Pacific Coast to take the trade away from us and the only reason they are getting it is because we allow them to have it. Surely it would be much more economical and much better business for all points in western Montana to buy merchandise from Salt Lake than to 13 . order it from cisco. Yet they are getting it from Chicago or San Fran- these distant points. Why? Because we havent gone after it. Because, we havent explained to them why it would be to their advantage to buy from this point. We havent told them they can save money on their freight besides a great deal of time in transit. , If Mrs. Smith comes into a Butte store for certain merchandise that they happen to be out of, the management sends to Chicago or Rome other distant point for it, whereas a wire to Salt Lake, or an air mail letter, would enable them to have the merchandise in their hands by noon the next day. Their customer would be made happy and would continue to be a staunch patron and friend of the concern. On the other hand, by the time the merchandise could be obtained from Chicago or San Francisco, Mrs. Smith will, in all probability, have secured the merchandise elsewhere. There are many merchants in Butte who buy absolutely nothing from Salt Lake City. If the real facts were laid before them they would immediately see the advantage gained in securing merchandise direct from Salt Lake rather than waiting a week or longer r to get it from eastern or western points. Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Denver all reach out for trade at much greater distances and have succeeded in building up big industrial cities. Salt' Lake City can . up.. We have allowed many opportunities to slip by us which have been grabbed up very quickly by some other city not half as capable of putting the thing over as Salt Lake. The thing for Salt Lake and Utah to do is to open the way. for xhariufacturers . to come here, It would pay us well to give them land free arid even allow them to operate for some 'time, tax free. in. order, to get them here. There isnt another city in the west that has as much. to offer the seeker of an industrial site as Salt Lake City. We are ideally situated, our climate is .unr surpassed and we haye a big territory waiting for us to supply them with merchandise. If we will do these things there is nothing under the sun that can stop Salt Lake City from being the largest city between the Mississippi River and the Coast. .! . , . , the same. .The condition that, exists with the Butte merchants exists all over this Sometime ago the Commercial Club hired an eastern man to come in here and make an industrial survey. We were promised this report before this. It should be forthcoming soon.. We are anxious to know the findings: However, we dont need any 'survey. All we have to do is take a look atouf ' location, our resources and our own findings will tell us, beyond, any doubt, that this is the logical jobbing and industrial center of the intermountain west. The spirit is the thing and that is all we lack enthusiasm. So we say again, lets have some more rousing, boosting mass meetings.
