Show THE CITIZEN 14 SOME DAY UTAH WILL TAKE HER RIGHTFUL PLACE IN OIL INDUSTRY ' Immense Oil Shale Beds. A VAST embryonic industry of Utah is centered in the big natural oil fields that extend from the northern border to the southern extremity of the state and lap over into northern Arizona. This condition exists in marked degree at the junction of Washington County with the Arizona line, at and near the Hurricane fault, a vast cleavage in the earth's formation trending north, and south. The structures involved and located generally in Utah territory, are the Virgin and the Bloomington dome. Drilling to extreme depth is now in progress on the Bloomington dome by COMING TO SALT LAKE CITY Dr. Flellenthin & Co. SPECIALISTS in Internal Medicine for the past fifteen years. Both oil and gas have been encountered in small quantities in this test. The Virgin structure, controlled mostly by the Diamond Oil Company, gave Utah its first oil production some twenty, yearsago avwhen a number pf shallow-nvelTeraging around 50 feet depth, were driltejjr'Same of tliese pioneer wells haver been producers ever since that first hectic flurry in oil in Utah. An outstanding event bearing directly on oil in Utah was the tapping of s, the oil sand at 2028 feet in the Frank Shafer, well near Moab. This test was eventually sent down several hundred feet farther into a salt dome. It has now been plugged and the oil sand at the original discovery horizon is being pumped for production, the oil being used to fire the power plant for the sinking of an offset well to test out the salt dome theory at a lower horizon on the structure. Oil in Utah now looms strong in the Uintah basin section and in Diamond Fork, which constitutes the western rim of this vast oil sand and oil shale deposition, held by the U. S. government geological survey to be the greatest in the world. Diamond Oil Company is now drilling its third hole on what is known as the Buskirk Anticline in Diamond Fork, which has now attained a depth in excess of 900 feet. Gas and oil showings have been developed at various depths from 106 to 765 feet. Midwest Company is down over 2000 feet with its Ashley Valley test which developed 29,000,000 cubic feet of gas flow in the Morrison stratum at close around 1650 feet. It is understood casing is being run to effect a water shutoff before drilling deeper. Western Venture Corporation is drilling a test hole on the Vernal Monocline, northwest of the city of Vernal. This is now down to a depth of 735 feet. The objective sand is placed at around the 850-fomark, as considerable oil was developed in the old Reed well drilled some years ago at a slightly higher horizon owing to location of the well. Western Venture Corporation is also about ready to spud in a test on the Dog Valley anticline, for which a regulation standard equipment will be employed, as a deep test is contemplated. Oil field exploration companies, notinterests, are ably the Raddatz-Lenor- a drilling for oil north of the Great Salt Lake, on what is known as the Rozelle anticline. This field is' noted for its vast asphaltum beds that occur chiefly in the shallow reaches of the Great Salt Lake area. It is estimated that oil shales found in the Uintah Basin, Utah, have an oil content of more than 1,770,000 standard barrels of oil per square mile of territory, where oil shale occurs. According to government statistics there is more oil contained in the oil shales found in Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and Nevada, than has been taken from the ground through oil wells, covering the entire period, more than sixty years, since oil wells were first ot brought in, in Pennsylvania. This vast potential source of crude oil awaits the time when the oil wells cease to flow. The retort will then supplant the oil rig and the driller will, perforce, function as a miner, digging the le FOUR animals went to a circus a duck, a pig, a frog, and a skunk. It took thirty years to develop oil in Wyoming; Utah has been engaged in the pursuit of the Golden Flow for upwards of four years. Utah's first flowing well should arrive this year. Certain it is that her vast oil shale fields are waiting patiently for the time to come when it will be cheaper to mine oil than to drill for it. The doctor was examining school children.
