He said: The miner and the farmer have a joint complaint that the price levels of their commodities are both below the relative average price levels of the commodities they must buy and the wages they must pay. While the average wholesale prices of all commodities today are about 47 per cent r, above copper is 21 per cent above; silver, 8 per cent below; iron ore, 14 per cent above; zinc, 12 per cent above; aluminum 7 per cent above; crude oil, 18 per cent above; bituminous coal, 42 per cent above; and lead, 54 per cent above. It is only by the most rigid economies and the introduction of every known laborsaving device and technical improvement that these industries have been able to keep going. That minerals are turned out at these prices in the face of wages over 100 r, is itper cent higher than self a great tribute to the capacity of the engineers and executives in these industries. Silver, however, is much lower than it should be, the price hovering around 57 cents, whereas it should at least bring in $1 in the market. England for some rea- the silver market, and a good reason. So many complaints about unsatis- factory farm conditions and pleas for higher prices for farm products and different forms of government aid for the farmers are heard on every hand, that probably a majority of the people believe that the farmer is the only producer who receives less for his products than he did before the war.
