Show THE CITIZEN HIGH TAXES BEAR FRUIT. that only through by public officials will we be able to solve tax problems. Some of our public officials announce study May be so. There is one thing certain, if we continually pass freak laws caiiing for big political jobs, the tax question will never be solved. Let us abolish every useless public official. That will be the first step in the right direction. Then repeal every class and special privilege law, which requires so much red tape to handle, and run the state as a successful business man would his own we will soon find that tax adjustment will private business, and take care of itself. High frills in government costs money. High taxes are the underlying causes of most of our wars. Right now a civil war has been started in the Ukraine, where hundreds of tax collectors have been killed by the populace, and the army is now retaliating with shot, shell and destruction, and whole villages laid in ruins and devasted. Our present government is the result of a bloody and war and of high taxation. The people stand gouging only so long. Let us start at the root of the evil. ?f I 9 EASY FOR CRIMINALS j j in The many municipal scandals originating the past year be-cause of the alleged careless methods in vogue in posting bonds for criminals call for drastic remedies to correct these abuses. In ordinary cases, at least, the judges an the courts should i require a CASH bond, wThich would be immediately forfeited for noncompliance with the terms prescribed by the court. A lot of red tape would be eliminated, the court wrould need no collectors, j nor police officers, nor sheriffs, to hunt up the delinquents. The bonds should be of such magnitude as would guaranteed the I appearance of those charged with crime. Much time would be saved in the courts, as well as money saved for the taxpayers. There is absolutely no excuse for the present loose methods j employed, which makes our courts look like jokers. Everything f is made easy for the criminal and very hard for the law abiding J In citizen. Can we have some refonus along these lines and when? E " EASY FOR GRAFTERS. Nearly every day the press carries feature stories of some high official connected with graft. Col. Thomas W. Miller, former alien property custodian, has been found guilty of wrong doing and is fined $5,000 and eighteen months in prison. The amount involved is some $7,000,000. This is one of many aftermaths of the late war, during which several of our high financiers were found worshiping the golden calf. The law of compensation works slowly but surely, and none can escape. DISAPPEARING MILK BOTTLES. Manager Hoskisson of Hoskisson s chain of stores reports that his milk bottles are disappearing and the solution is no nearer how than heretofore. He says that milk dealers are delivering milk in other than their own bottles in a maojrity of cases. Judge Marks has set March 1 as the date for the milk deal- ers to get together to solve the milk bottle trouble. The people never pay any attention to the names on the bottles and when purchasing milk they grab the first bottle in sight and go to the store with it and they never read the name on the new bottle it's the milk the customer wants. Since this milk trouble, Hoskisson says his milk business has increased just sixty times. He sells milk for one cent less, not delivered, than do the dairies delivering their milk, and he beilieves the customer is entitled to one cent discount when they call for their milk. Senator La Follette has made his fight against the third term. Now we wonder if La Follette chooses to be THE candidate for president. Commissioner Burton believes that more playhouses for the boys would lessen the present crime wave among young thieves. Why not purchase each of the boys an automobile? We still insist that the leniency shown to young criminals is an inducement to commit more crime. Playhouses will not correct the evil. It SPRY WILL NOT RUN. Former Governor William Spry, commissioner of the general land office, has cancelled his race for senatorship from Utah because of ill health. Several months ago Spry announced that he would try for the nomination, and a host of his friends immediately got busy and a strong political machine was in the way of making, his friends being confident that they could secure the nomination for him. As a result his many friends are greatly disappointed that he is unable to make the race. Spry was one of the best m inn iff im no governors in the history of Utah. In the old days the candidate who spent the most money was regarded as a hero. Now all he gets is an investigation by the idyl senate. m i POLITICAL COMEDY. teM m j Hi j pea- - H m The City Commissioners when appeared to take it much to heart the many street rumors of appears that the BIG QUESTION in the coming presidential campaign wrill be RELIGION. Hence, all political issues may be dodged. Representative Berger of Wisconsin wants the wartime espionage act repealed, claiming it vicious legislation during peace time. Italy has abolished universal suffrage and restricted the right in the future to those who contribute to the progress of the nation. And doubtless contributing to the progress of the nation means voting for Mussolini. ' for m It graft protection finally sifted The new city of Corkscrew has been founded in Florida.
